Pre-ordered the collector's edition of New Vegas yesterday. I'm looking forward to this game. I've created at lest a dozen characters in 3 and spent some several hundreds of ours in it and intend to outdo myself with NV. Anyone else getting this?

Also, general Fall-out discussion.

Day 1 purchase for me, not really sure if I'll preorder it though. I'm not quite as easily sold by preorder bonuses unless it's an Atlus title or something and there are free hats involved.

I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to play on the new hardcore mode or not. No weightless items (ammo included!), stimpaks heal over time instead of instantly, you can die of thirst if you don't hydrate regularly, combat is more difficult, and (I assume) radiation plays a bigger role than before.

I like the sound of RPing in this mode even more than the normal game... but if it disables fast travel then fuck it, I'll stick to normal.

Fast travel is what ruins Fallout, at least it did for me in F3. Although hiking in one go from Tenpenny Tower to the Republic of Dave could be bothersome sometimes. There's plenty that happens on the way there though.

I'm definitely checking out hardcore mode. I'll probably end up doing nothing but hardcore mode after my first playthrough. I've played F3 and its DLC on extra hard all the time too. Still found it often to be too easy, minus that one time going melee only in Old Olney. I learned by chance that stimpaks and other chems didn't weigh anything in F3, so i always had a small supply with me. Afterwards i started carrying hundreds of stimpaks and buffouts... Ammo was available in virtually limitless amounts, excluding mini-nukes. I need the game to put on limitations for me, cause i sure ain't gonna do it myself. So yeah, hardcore all the way.

New Vegas will be a first week purchase for me.

I'm playing Fallout 3 for a second time and the chick I am using is straddling the "neutral" karma line. Not sure how letting the ghouls attack Tenpenny is so bad considering that most of the residents are pricks anyway. Maybe bad is the way to go. Fawkes is pretty damn gamebreaking.

Roy Philips ain't exactly the nice guy, his way is that of genocide. You can let the ghouls in through another way than letting the ferals kill everyone. If you convince the Tenpenny residents to allow the ghouls to stay through speech checks, you can earn positive karma AND let in the ghouls into the tower. But if you leave the tower and return later, all the humans will be dead and their bodies stashed in the storage anyway. Personally i always kill Roy and his gang, because i think they are a bunch of rotting zombie maggot farms and i always send them back to hell when i can. Also, i will have more traders at the tower available to me.

I seem to recall there is a way to kill Roy without it affecting your karma (which is weird because as you said, he's quite evil). If you egg him on enough, he will attack you. Self-defense, I swear.

One of the funnier nuances in the game between the two genders is when you seduce Burke in Megaton and he writes the MC love letters. Never understood why he would write love letters and yet still have the gall to hire the Talon Mercs.

Yeah, talking them into attacking you is one way to kill them without losing karma. You can also lure a feral near them and they will turn hostile to you, allowing you to kil them without karma loss. Or use the sandman perk.

Burke will actually call off the nuking if you seduce him. It's just that those Talon guys are aggresive enough to chase after you anywhere if you have the slightest bit of good karma. EVen if you've never spoken to Burke.

I think fast travel is just a deal-breaker for me 'cause with only so many hours in the day to play videogames, I'd rather not spend too many of them running from explored location A to explored location B, with random encounters added, if there's a quicker way of getting there.

Now, Oblivion's style of fast travel where you didn't have to actually discover locations first, that was pretty lame.

Oblivion... We need a new TES. :¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's fun to have a Deathclaw hot in your tail and crash into an Enclave camp and have them duke it out. Or watch a fight between some Enclave soldiers, mind-controlled Deathclaws, regular Deathclaws, a couple of Albino Radscoprions and... a bloatfly. Or follow a caravan and cross the path of another caravan... at an Enclave camp. Good stuff, although i agree there can be rather boring walks. Eventually i started skipping the Megaton-Rivet City trek for example. Nothing ever happened anyway after all the random encounters along the way had been activated.

Especially if you consider that the quickest way to Rivet from Megaton on foot is by popping a Rad X and swimming down the Potomac, so nothing would spawn that way anyway... unless Mirelurks can swim, which I don't think they do.

I'm glad for that since, to reference Oblivion again, aquatic enemies are a gigantic pain in the ass. Bethesda's engine just doesn't do water very well unless it's modded.

The metro drove me batshit insane at times. As soon as I got to Rivet, that was one part of the game that I didn't want to screw around with ever again.

I love that with the Broken Steel add-on you can potentially run into Enclave soldiers almost instantaneously. Give me your plasma rifle, son!

Depends on where you cross the river. I usually went through the Anchorage War Memorial for the best chances of action, no need to get out of action's way. Mirelurks can swim, but they always spawn somewhere near the shore. Slaughterfish hunting for a crappy amulet, anyone? Good thing NV is set in a desert.

Anybody managed to find Tacoma on their own? :pac

Slaughterfish, fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. Fighting those stupid things for the amulet really wasn't worth it.

Yeah, metros. Probably my least favourite part of Fallout 3. Probably why I never really did anything in downtown DC except for the main storyline missions.

Some more New Vegas info: a no-kill game will be possible this time, as will a genocide game in which only one adult NPC is immune. Reminds me of the first Fallout where the Vault 13 overseer was the only person you couldn't kill.

Like the article says, going for a no-kill completion in Hardcore mode would be badass.

[update: except for children, whom you still cannot hurt]
:argh:

A no-kill completion sounds boring (my Fat Men always need to be fired as often as possible). As a challenge it sounds interesting and now i feel compelled to at least play it once that way.

Are there some perks that you guys just can't bring yourself to learn? I refuse to get the Cannibal perk. That's just...gross.

As for perks I always pick up, Animal Friend, Ninja, and Small Guns are all pretty sweet. During my first playthrough, I made the mistake of learning all of the Swift Learner perks as well as the Here and Now option. Suffice it to say, I was pretty pissed when I learned the level cap without Broken Steel was level 20.

I also grab Animal Friend since the fewer Yao Guai I have to fight/little mole rats I have to waste ammo on, the better. Ladykiller/Black Widow is another staple for my characters since I tend to like anything that opens up new dialogue options and has combat effects that aren't limited to super specific enemy types.

Re: Bottlecap for your throughts

I tend to go with:

Bloody Mess (+5% damage in addition to the other obvious effect)
All Intense Training ranks (+1 SPECIAL stat)
Educated (+3 skill points when levelling up)
Entomologist (fucking radscorps)
Toughness (+10% permanent damage redux)
Gunslinger & COmmando (VATS accuracy+)
Strong Back (+50 pounds storage)
Finesse (+5% critical)
Pyromaniac (with Heavy Incinerator)
Life Giver (+30 HP)
Sniper (+25% chance for headshot in VATS)
Cyborg (+10 Energy Weapons, +10% to Rad Resistance, Poison Resistance and Damage Resistance)
Adamantium Skeleton (Wolverine!)
Better Criticals (+50% critical damage )
Concentrated Fire (+5% accuracy in V.A.T.S. with every attack queued )

And the staple: Grim Reaper's Sprint.

As for Broken Steel perks, i like Quantum Chemist. I always have a surplus of Nuka Cola and making them into Quantums is rather useful for making Nuka Grenades.

Here and Now and Swift Learner suck yeah, i try to gain XP as slowly as possible (killing sprees aside). I also never take Mysterious Stranger, it's too unreliable and the guy shows up just five times and an entire playthrough. Perks like Contract Killer are useless to me as well, bottlecaps are fairly easy to collect anyway. Computer Whiz is useless, i just cancel out the terminal if i can't get it hacked on my current attempt. Infiltrator is useless cause i never force locks. I never use ninja either, cause i never go melee and can't get the required melee stat for this.

Strong Back is a must for me as well because I am a damn hoarder in this game. Totally forgot about Entomologist. Love that perk. It's made even more bad-ass when you kill rad-scorpions with melee weapons.

I have never picked up the Sandman perk. Not really a fan of killing people in their sleep. I'll kill them in their face, son!

Question: Who loves Dogmeat so much that they refuse to take him with them on certain explorations? Sorry, boy. You can't handle a deathclaw.

I LOVE Dogmeat. I tend to leave him at home indeed and refuse to exploit the Dogmeat multiple followers glitch (involves killing Dogmeat over and over). Instead i use the RL-3 exploit. Dogmeat becomes quite powerful once your level goes into the twenties though, up to being able to handle a Deathclaw by himself (with maybe a stimpack or two). Albino Radscorps are still too much though. i... HATE... Albinoes... Even with Entomologist.

Sandman sucks. Silenced 9mm or a silenced Infiltrator is my choice for stealthy assassinations.

Dogmeat was FANTASTIC during the first Enclave assault with Optim--I mean Liberty Prime. He only required a few stimpacks and he destroyed some bitches.

The dickest moment in the game for me is when you have the option of enslaving that poor kid whose dad was killed by fire ants. That was wrong and yet hilarious at the same time. Of course, one of the most gratifying moments in the game involves systematically disposing of every slaver. Ah, yeah. Fighter for justice, bitch!

Heh, that's one of the better things i like about Fallout. Them choices. Speaking of being a dick, poor mister Lopez (or whatever his name was) you can tell him to go kill himself, or perhaps literally push him off the Rivet City's tower. Choices!

Nothing is more gratifying than blowing up Megaton though. Nothing. Disclaimer, i usually play good guy.

I dunno. Calling the women of Tenpenny Tower "stuck up bitches" is pretty awesome.

Never understood why killing Outcast soldiers procured fingers. It's not like they are bad guys. They just have a completely different goal than Lyons. Totally weird. Also weird that his daughter wasn't hurtin' for a squirtin' from the main character (male or female).

Or have some feral ghouls do it for you. At any rate, Tenpenny's is the place to be!

As for the Outcasts, they are scripted to be evil. However, the three named Outcasts in front of Fort Independence will drop ears when you kill them, implying they are good guys. I agree they're not really evil.

That may be just your fantasy... But you know how millitary types can be totally tied down with their job. Power armour is equipped to deal with its wearer's droppings. Who knows what other urges it can take care of. But who cares about her, i'll gladly give up the Citadel for Dukov's place with everything included.

I would also like to say that the Gary clones in one of the vaults (was it 92?) made me laugh out loud. They had a "Gary!" for every emotion. "Ah, hah, hah. Gary!" Reminded me so much of Timmy from South Park.

Oh, and the kids from Little Lamplight had the DIRTIEST mouths that I have ever heard in any medium, be it video game, movie, or comic. I should have never escorted that one loser to Big Town...
