So, we just got a Switch and have begun playing Breath of the Wild. It's definitely a bit of a slow start, but I think we'll get into it.

I hear it basically turns into Skyrim after the first hour so I'm sure you'll probably dig it.

Oh yeah, I've been played FE Fates: Revelation (the DLC route that you're supposed to play after the other 2). The problem is that since you get the characters from both routes combined (and their potential children), there are just SO many fucking characters that it's a bit overwhelming. That said, child units are optional, and you certainly don't need to recruit everyone, but I'm a completionist.

My latest gaming obsession is KOF'98 UM OL (Ultimate Match Online). Yes it's a Gacha game, but man the KOF license gets me. Here's my current team:

Image

Mary was probably the most gacha of the characters I have so far, you need 100 fragments to recruit her and depending on RNG and my performance in one of the minigames, I was getting 0-4 fragments per day... then they had a gem event where I could drop some funds and fast track my progress, so I did it XD

It's actually not that bad as far as gacha goes, at the end of each month they have a lucky cat event where you bet diamonds to get more diamonds - but you can't get fewer than you put in. The higher your VIP level (i.e. the more money you spent) the more chances you get and more diamonds you can win, but it's possible to get the limited release boss characters even if you don't drop any money, as long as you are disciplined.

Anyway, I've dropped some money on it and am having a lot of fun. Since the game came out in Japan, then Asia, and now Global - there's actually a lot of information for us about what's coming, and a Filipino guy has been posting good videos on YouTube to help us on Global to get the most out of the game.

There are a whole lot of different modes, but here's a video that shows quite a few of the characters in action:
phpBB [video]

The tournament mode is all 1v1s, so you can see a bunch of HuaHero's boss characters here too:
phpBB [video]

Yeah I'm pretty into it :pac

I finally got around to installing my backup drive. Even after unloading nonessentials off my SSD I still have like 900GB free. How do I hold all these gigs?

So I guess I can finally get around to playing 30GB+ monstrosities like Metal Gear Solid V. Similarly big stuff like XCOM 2 and Overwatch will continue to live on the SSD though, and Fallout 4 with all its mods probably benefit a lot from the SSD's better speed.

Anyway. I also reinstalled Fire Emblem Heroes. It seems way more stable now and there's more to do, so that's nice. Logging in after a few months got me a ton of orbs which eventually got me a cool dragon lady from summoning. WE FEASTIN'

Wait, you still get the daily bonuses without logging in every day?

Good question. I think it was like two batches of ten and a few more thrown at me in pairs or individually, so maybe it was some kinda "welcome back please don't leave again" sorta thing.

I really gotta get my teams in order. I guess I was just rollin' with my bae squad before and ignoring little things like "balance" and folks who might be way more useful but just don't look cool.

Most of my teams are unbalanced because I just can't seem to get any green units that are worth a damn, if at all.

I have like four green axepeople and the only one I like is Anna. Too bad trading isn't a thing, but I guess that would get people balancing their squads too quickly and not spending cash on orbs.

I guess we can at least feed dudes into other dudes to learn new skills now? I should do that, unless those skills vanish the moment I unlock potential later.

It's true! I'm not sure if I want to date him or goth dad yet, and I'm going between the two. I don't know enough about the game to know if I get punished or not for going for more than one man.

Speaking of, Robert's route includes Joseph's wino wife. She's also somewhat goth, given how she dresses. Aside from the cross necklace, I'd say she's me because she's a booze hound that wears all black. I want to get to know her, too.

Finally getting into the Metal Gear Solid V stuff. Polished off Ground Zeroes in a couple sittings as expected. You could say that I played it like a damn fiddle. Onto the real deal now.

I wonder why that thing still exists as a separate entity and wasn't just rolled into Phantom Pain at some point. Whatevs.

The Phantom Pain's prologue, specifically the hospital section before the fight in the lobby, might be the darkest thing I've ever seen in video games. Some real Children of Men shit.

All the furor over Konami's self-inflicted woes around the same time made people forget how good Phantom Pain could be, I think. If that game came out like two months later, it would have been Giant Bomb's GOTY for sure. (As it is, #2 isn't bad)

Is staff morale something I should be worried about? I keep getting messages about dudes getting into fights and ending up in the infirmary, but I really don't feel like putting my side ops on hold every half-hour to fly back to Mother Base just to run around collecting salutes.

e: oh well golly gee maybe the dozen dudes I had with the Troublemaker "skill" had something to do with that. DELETED.

Morale isn't particularly important. At least not important enough to actually do stuff about, beyond making sure your base is free of troublemakers.

Getting rid of troublemakers coincidentally means there's extra hamburger meat the next day in the Mother Base cafeteria. Or at least it does in my head canon.

(But yeah considering what y'all are up to, the idea that most of your soldiers weren't brutalised into joining and then "dealt with" when not needed would be odd to me.)

Fultoning people never gets old.

That said, I find myself only doing it on people with B stats or better. Others seem to just fulton goddamned everyone though, which feels excessive. No C-E scrubs on Mother Base while I'm in charge.

When Mother Base is full, the game automatically boots the soldiers with the worst stats (unless they have unique skills) so for at least the first third of the game, there's probably an argument that it's more efficient to just fulton whoever rather than checking stats all the time.

After a while most new recruits that way will just get kicked though, so then you need to check more. Heroism affects volunteer stats, Fame affects "wild" soldier stats. Or vice versa. It's been a while.

Good points. I ain't fully staffed in most sections yet so even a few C students would probably help more than empty slots. Though I also seem to be getting a fair amount of dudes in the A range thanks to challenges.

Gots to find myself a transportation specialist so I can start fultoning cargo containers.

I'm watching Dan and Drew's MGSV run as I play. I had no idea until just now that guard towers are destructible. Man, this game is basically one Jennifer Hale character away from being my ideal modern Mercenaries sequel. (RIP Mercenaries, RIP Pandemic, etc.)

e: Drew landing tranq shots at 40m+ without iron sights is makin' me feel mighty inadequate.

Metal Gear Scanlon V was the only time I became "that" Giant Bomb viewer about *how* they were playing.

In true "John's about 6 months-2 years behind on games" fashion: Hey, Nier Automata's really good.

Unlocking the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood mission things filled up my Mother Base roster toot sweet. I can make tranquilizer sniper rifles now, which is good timing, considering I'm getting sniped at by some lady in not a whole lot of clothes.

Back in my day we could just cheese our way through half-naked sniper duels with Nikita missiles.

I wouldn't mind playing Automata just 'cause of how cool the story stuff and multiple endings work, but I dunno if that combat's gonna hold my attention for long.

Whatever, sniping her is for wimps. Pro strat: call in supply drops on her head.

Automata's Bayonetta-esque combat is fine, overall. If that's not your bag, play it on easy and then at least battles are short and are at least viscerally button-mashy rather than a lot of dodging around, getting hit out of combos, et cetera. My problem with the DMC-style combats is that having your flow broken SUCKS.

But yeah, I think the story stuff is right up your alley.

But since you mentioned GOTY stuff on Twitter, someone, anyone, really needs to give Horizon Zero Dawn a shot. Don't let me be the only one flying that flag in December. Speaking of story stuff, that one completely took me by surprise. I only found out later that it's written by one of the New Vegas people, and the Honest Hearts guy in particular, so go figure.

Horizon feels like it's going to do for me what Mass Effect did during the last cycle. That's a rare thing, and probably a big enough feather in the cap to unseat Persona 5 for the top slot, depending on how I feel on my replays of both.
