[Battle Royale] 100 X Y onto a Z

Only a couple of us here are actually playing so far but every Twitch streamer and YouTube "personality" and games website staff on the planet is in full zeitgeist mode over this thing, and we've talked a lot about it in the Giant Bomb thread, so it's probably worth starting a thread for it now.

Playerunknown's Playerunknown's Battlegrounds (by Playerunknown) is a Steam Early Access first/third-person shooter (better in third) that airdrops 100 90-ish players onto a very large 8km2 island full of abandoned cities, ominous wheat fields, bridges you should never cross, a few old Jeeps and Dacias (GREAT NEWS!) and a lot of guns. But never the gun you want at the moment you need it.

It's a battle royale thing: you scrounge for gear, hunt or avoid other players, scramble to stay within the safe zone, and basically just try to survive long enough to become the last player alive. But usually you die. A lot. In great ways and often inexplicable ways.

Naturally as an Early Access thing based on mods of mods of old Arma gameplay tech, it's kind of a hilarious mess.

I've been thinking about starting up a CF Discord basically just for this and random text chat or whatever other stuff comes up, so if I ever get that done I'll drop in a link later.

Post pro strats! I'm very bad at this game!

I'm into edging. Which is a term with absolutely no other meaning. Land in some far off crapsack, gear up. First circle you have 5 minutes and it's slow as fuck, no problem, no matter where you are. After that, keep grabbing the building closest to the edge of the new circle, repeat.

Bathroom + shotgun pointed at door is always good. Few windows. Smarter players would throw a grenade in before dashing in but they don't.

If you fire a few shots from a distance, hit someone but don't kill them, leave. Let someone else deal with it. You don't need a lucky headshot ending your run.

A late game car or jeep is pretty much movable cover/armour but good players can shoot you down all the same.

Crouch run through open spaces, if someone shoots at you, stand up and make a break for it. It's faster and that's about your only hope. Going prone is good on roof tops but not much else.

If you have decent gear and are in the circle, get inside and stay put. Moving should only be to get something vital (med stuff, a not shit gun, ammo, helmet, etc.). Of course, if you have more fun running and gunning go for it.

Sometimes you're just going to land and there's going to be some fucker already geared up who'll shoot you dead. It happens. No big deal. There's a thing where not all parachutes appear? So even if it looks like no one landed near you, it's no guarantee.

You can probably get about 1.5 large sections of the map away from your jumping point.

I call it edgelording. Because I'm the lord of the edge, you see. But yeah, that's been working well for me on solo runs and the occasional SQUAD that doesn't constantly land in the most populated spots possible for whatever dumb raisin. I like small groups of two or three farmhouses or whatever. At higher elevations there's some cool stables (?) that sometimes spawn sniper rifles, if only I were not-crap at sniping.

I'm probably best with mid-range carbines like the SCAR or M16 or whatever. I think the UMP is pretty underrated.

I hope they add beartraps and claymore mines at some point. Those could be hilarious, if rather situational.

I've never played duo or squad because, ick, strangers. Yeah, small building clusters are good and pretty safe, especially early on. It's essentially a bunch of dice roles on gear at low risk.

I'm a dab hand at a shotgun. My sniping is atrocious, mainly because every good spot also feels super exposed to me. Maybe it's just paranoia.

I don't know if mines would be awful or awesome. They'd have to be pretty detectable or able to disarm, maybe. I hear binoculars are coming in soon. Which would be a game changer in a lot of ways despite being a passive item.

The only duos and SQUADs I've run have been with friends, I can't imagine trying to run through Battlegrounds with pubbies. Occasionally if there are only three of us in SQUAD and the host forgets to uncheck the matchmaking box we'll get a lone pubbie who'll almost always get separated and die because we're in our own Discord voice channel and they're not.

Considering the state of the local voice channel I can't imagine ever playing this game with strangers.

Laying a claymore at a closed door, underneath an empty jeep, or in the middle of random loot would be pretty hilarious. I'd want limb damage before bear traps get added though. Getting snared in one of those should basically reduce your movement to a limp if you survive and disarm it.

I also kinda want RPGs. Maybe just in airdropped crates though, like the tommy gun.

Played some duo with a friend earlier today. It felt like a totally different animal, to be honest. Got the hang of it by the third game though. Being in communication takes like 10% of my brain, which slows me down a bit.

My issue is that remembering to hit the push-to-talk key in the middle of a fracas or fumbling around for it when I should be fumbling around for something else feels kinda awkward and potentially dangerous. An open voice channel is probably ideal for this game but that's not something I ever see on Discord.

There's in-game open voice for team only, which I used just fine.

Finally got around to patching up, now it's just a matter of figuring out how bad my ping is pulling myself away from the Overwatch anniversary event.

Zombies.

*deep sigh*

At least it'll be a custom game mode. I just hope it doesn't drain too many people away from the real deal.

Depends how it goes, if it's a bullrush kind of thing that could be fun (everyone who dies becomes a zombie, the winner is the last living human) - I guess the range that a lot of combat happens at means you wouldn't often kill someone only to be immediately mauled by their zombie form.

Looks like they're adding some amount of destructibility to some buildings, but... which ones? :ohdear

That'll make red zones potentially way scarier and maybe put grenades into play more often. I doubt this includes fire propagation physics otherwise it would give molotovs a terrifying new purpose, too. I wonder if small arms can shoot through walls now.

My first guess would be the little hunting sheds, though potentially all wooden walls could be breakable. I wonder if it includes phsyics for ceiling collapses or if it will be like doors which just get holes in em.

eff yeah desert map

Probably still a long way off though.

If it has unique weather effects like sandstorms or any map-exclusive items/weapons, that would be really cool, but just having new maps at all is a huge deal.

Yeah it's nice to see a different map style. It's like they're doing all the things DayZ hinted at but couldn't follow through on.

This is from May so I dunno how much is different now without digging through a ton of patch notes but maybe it'll be helpful anyway.

Oh. First-person servers. That's potentially a really big gameplay shift, though I wonder how many people will use 'em.

I did my first rainy run this morning. The effects are cool, plus there's thunder, which totally didn't make me jump every time and accidentally fire at shadows, no way.

The sunset effects are nice when they happen too, but what I really want is a full-on night map.

1.0 is out. First run on the new desert map resulted in this

Last dude being a couple seconds too slow getting out of the blue gave me a pacifist run victory and my first chicken dinner. Mm. Tastes like pacifism.

Nice Del! That's quite the moment, a first win on the new map, and it was zero kills! Amazing :awesome

This janky-ass VR PUBG clone looks like it could actually get pretty good eventually.
