[Battle Royale] 100 X Y onto a Z

I'm ready go tonight. There's a party, alright. We don't need the raisin for joy, oh yeah. Tick down to midnight.

Turning this into a general battle royale thread 'cause PUBG has sorta fallen off + there are other, more accessible Battle Royale games we could be talking about.

Such as this thing! Ring of Elysium, up on Steam as of October 2018 or so in Early Access. A full release is scheduled for somewhere between 3 and 6 months from now, so... the 2019 GOTY list is a go. :pac

Like Radical Heights before it, this is a free game with a 3-dollar founder's pack DLC. It'll still be free after Early Access. Recent updates have added a Fortnite-style battle pass, not sure if it has the same seasonal hook, but otherwise it appears to be the new standard buy-in and player progression rollout almost everyone does now.

I wasn't expecting a BR game to give me this much cosmetic control, and right off the bat, before you even see a production card or a title card. I'd rather not think about how much time I burned adjusting eyelid sliders.

The major differences from PUBG et. al are as follows: first, and most obvious, this is a winter-themed game. There's one map currently, about half or three-quarters the size of the PUBG default - the player population scales down accordingly - with the appearance of a Winter Games setting. There are big mountains and slopes for verticality (and traversal, but we'll get to that in a second). A good number of snowmen for flavour. Big ones!

Second: there's no airdrop at the start of matches, and, thank fuck, no laggy-ass lobby to wait in. Instead, players simply pick a spawn point out of dozens on the map, and each selection is shown to everyone else. I like this idea a lot 'cause it introduces some new possibilities and strategies, or even mind-games. Wait 'til the last second to ensure you're not starting near anyone but risk missing out on good loot? Slam-pick a good spawn and risk everyone else coming at you? Intentionally pick a spawn on someone's flank and hope they don't notice? Repeatedly choose the same area until you know it like the back of your hand?

No circles here. It's not a pure square grid, but more an assortment of geographical sectors, if that makes any sense. They'll start to get colder as the matches progress in at least three stages rather than a binary "in danger or not" kinda deal, and there's a thermometer on your HUD to keep track of this, along with a loose time-of-day indicator, which raises the possibility of a true day-night cycle eventually. One match put me in the morning, the other in the afternoon. Hmm.

But one of my favourite differences might be stuff like this. Snowboards! They aren't something you have to get lucky enough to find either, like the BMX bikes in Radical Heights. Instead, you actually get a choice between three loadout options at the same time you select your spawn. Snowboards are one of those, and fall right in the middle of the mobility vs. capacity outcome: some options will limit how much you can carry a little more but speed you up a lot. The other choices are hang gliders (lowest capacity, highest mobility) and climbing gear (the opposite.)

You can have a lot of fun with these options, or at least the glider and the snowboard. If you came in with a glider, you could potentially spawn on a peak somewhere and fly around forever, sticking to the rooftops, or even getting into one of the ski lifts crossing the map and attack from the skies as they pass over populated spots - you can shoot while gliding, which sounds hilarious. All the physics feel fine. Activating your chosen gear is a simple T-key toggle you always have.

More generally, Elysium feels a little closer to PUBG than Fortnite, but it's definitely nowhere near as grognardy about its details. I don't think it bothers with the finer points of ballistics modeling like bullet drop distance or whatever, but it retains most or all of the attachment gear. UI is a lot more slick, at least in actual matches. There's some minor neat changes like the ability to equip two scopes on most guns and switch between them as needed. Technically speaking, it feels smoother and faster than PUBG, and unless big strides have been taken recently, way more optimized - even if it kinda sounded like my fans were going wild at some points.

It also looks pretty nice. Like most Battles Royale, it's not exactly Horizon Zero Dawn or whatever, but these character models are better than the average for the genre, the winter theme is great, and I dig the not-quite-xtreme-sports aesthetic of the cosmetics.

I think this one might be pretty good. My fear is that even being free and even with the ridiculous coffers Tencent is sitting on, Elysium might have trouble maintaining a healthy playerbase anyway, just 'cause BR might be at a saturation point already, or 'cause everything after Fortnite is a distant also-ran, no matter how good or promising they are. Also the Steam reviews are a hot mess, but that's nothing new.

Similar to PUBG my interest goes as far as watching others play it. I do like a good character creator though.

Stop me if you've heard this one before: 100 farmers drop into Pelican Town? Wait...

So, yeah, someone made a battle royale mod for Stardew Valley, though it sounds like it's a little maddening to get running right now.

Given the viewpoint, that seems weird; though I haven't played a BR game, so what do I know. Still, hard to sneak up on someone when they can see in all directions.
