Alright. Completed my "Natsuki" run. Slightly disappointing, since it's basically becomes a Yuri run. I did also complete the post Monika stuff, which actually does not take long. I love the credits, even with the "bad ending". I did check out all the endings on Youtube. I only missed 1, myself. The good ending. I do like the creator's note.

Now, to play a Sayori run, and get her scenes...

Since you two have been talking about it I checked out Doki Doki Literature Club myself and, uh, yeah. Wow. Maybe I should've started it earlier in the day 'cause I don't think I'll be sleeping easily tonight. This isn't an experience I'm going to forget any time soon. Hell, it may have just jumped right into the middle of my top ten.

The rest of you should give it a shot too. It's free on Steam and only a few hours long. Go in cold. Don't read or watch anything about it, anywhere, not even on the Steam store page or even here. Let it surprise you. You'll know it when it happens - or rather starts happening. Fucking christ.

Oh. Spoiler:
Spoiler :
I tried to get around Monika forcing your mouse cursor to her name by right clicking, then right clicking again and immediately left clicking to click on Natsuki. The game bugs the fuck out, you see nothing but Monika's eyes, and the center column of the screen gets covered in Monika buttons!

Wow that was a inventive way to try and get around that sequence, but interesting that they had a way to handle it.

I didn't play nearly as much as I wanted to this year, but there were several great gaming moments. I hope to be a better gamer in 2018!

CATEGORIES:

:awesome GAME OF THE YEAR! :awesome
Persona 5: Due to personal and academic stuff, I didn't play this game until September (I know, I know). I was hooked. Even though the story unravels slightly during Shido's palace, this is clearly the best RPG Atlus has ever developed. It's so good that I recommended it to friends who, in turn, recommended it to friends. These people hadn't even played JRPGs in the past!

:zoid BEST NEW CHARACTER! :zoid
Basically, you could put anyone from P5 in here. However, due to Yusuke's idiosyncrasies, I have to go with him.

:stare2 BEST GAMES TO WATCH :stare2
I can't contribute much here, but since you basically click and watch anywho (since it is an interactive narrative), Dream Daddy was strangely enjoyable. From what I have seen, in any case.

:pacbean THAT'S MODULAR! BEST MOD! :pacbean
Easily Stellaris' space eagle mod. I have had soooooooo many hilarious meta-narratives as the 'Merican Space Eagle Empire.

:picard BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT! :picard
I'll come back to this later.

:shibe SUCH MOMENT! MUCH INTENSE! WOW! :shibe
Spoiler :
The moment Kawakami became my lover in Persona 5. Up until that point, I was just giggling to myself as I pushed the social link to the max, full-knowing that Atlus wouldn't include the option to date my homeroom teacher in the game. Then it happened. From a gaming standpoint, it's pretty benign, but from a cultural perspective, that event is pretty intense.
:golf DAY LATE, DOLLAR SHORT! :golf

As you all know, this is basically my gaming life in a nutshell. I NEED to play XCOM 2 because I have only completed one battle. It's a beautiful game, so I hope to play it this month.

Right clicking works for Flash applets, so I thought it might work. In Doki Doki, it just removes the text windows, so you can look at the background image, but it does allow you that extra chance to click before it moves.

So TP, did my screenshot help encourage you to watch the LP of Doki Doki? Because I'd seen a lot of bits of coverage around the place before I watched this and it was all just the normal VN screenshots which meant I very nearly just entirely passed it by.

BONUS CATEGORY!
BEST OF BEST OF GIANTBOMB 2017!

It's got everything - PUBG, terrible motion controls, some solid observational comedy, Mary Kish, gullible Dan, and synthesized voices. Just checking the audio.

Nah. It was the description, and reference to Jesse and Dodger that made me check it out. Like I said: I like their personalities, I'm just not a fan of what they usually play. I listen to each podcast, though.

That middle section is perfect. Matches that sudden change in the game. The whole thing is pretty perfect, actually.

Someone needs to change the ghost "No Escape" scene in FF6 to say "Just Monika".

LETS DO

:awesome GAME OF THE YEAR! :awesome
Persona 5. Like Thor, I didn't start playing this until September (in my case I blame my stupid job.) To be completely honest, the rather poor description of the story and the fact that it took so damn long to come out after it was announced made me start losing interest. After I played 2 hours I got really into it and couldn't put it down. If it didn't fall down so much at the end, I'd probably consider it a better game than Persona 2 and I fucking love Persona 2.

:zoid BEST NEW CHARACTER! :zoid
Just Monika P5's Yusuke, my favorite socially awkward artist. He stole the scene at the beach.

:stare2 BEST GAMES TO WATCH :stare2
I wasn't interested in Horizon: Zero Dawn, but my wife played through a bunch of it and some of the late-game fights are pretty cool.

BONUS: I've been meaning to watch a LP of Danganronpa 3, because I love me a good mystery, but I thought the first game was such trash that I'm not buying DR3. also, i'm really bitter that DR gets 4 games and 2 anime, and meanwhile Zero Escape 3 had its funding slashed even though it's a way better series

:pacbean THAT'S MODULAR! BEST MOD! :pacbean
Spoiler for Doki Doki Literature Club :
I love all the ways this game breaks the fourth wall and does some Psycho Mantis shit. This is one of the things that is unique to video games as a story telling medium, so why is it so infrequent?
:picard BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT! :picard
Mass Effect: Andromeda. I am nuts for the Mass Effect trilogy. I own like, four sweaters. Admittedly I only played about 5 hours of this when it first came out, so I barely got into the meat of things, but I didn't like what I saw. The combat system feels really stripped down, and like Falcon said, it's hard to focus on the main story with all the endless side-content. The terrible facial rigging didn't help.

I know I am biased because Mass Effect 2 & 3 had already established the world and characters and could throw you right onto the ride, whereas Andromeda doesn't get that luxury. I'm planning on giving it another shot, but I'm going to artificially lower my expectations by pretending its a game that riffs off Mass Effect rather than actually being a Mass Effect title.

:shibe SUCH MOMENT! MUCH INTENSE! WOW! :shibe
Spoiler for Doki Doki Literature Club, again :
I figured out that Monika was some sort of omniscient being by early in act 2, but the way it all came together still surprised me. I actually got taken back a bit when she referred to me by name. Fuck the fan pack, I would straight up pay $10 for dump of all the things she says in the Monika Zone.
:golf DAY LATE, DOLLAR SHORT! :golf
Life is Strange. I bought this sometime in 2016, and WHY THE FUCK DID I WAIT UNTIL NOW?! I like Telltale's Walking Dead games, so if someone had told me this game starts out as Gone Home: The Telltale Adventure Game I probably would have played it instantly. Unlike The Walking Dead games, the characters have nuance and the choices you make actually change the story.
Spoiler for LiS :
It's refreshing to see a story where someone's suicide attempt affects the characters over the course of the game, rather than just being a dramatic thing that happens to move the plot along and then everyone promptly forgets about it.
:suicide BONUS ROUND: MOST FRUSTRATION :suicide
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. If you pre-ordered, you could start playing the new content 4 days before the official launch. Early in the main story quest, you had to go into a solo instance to do a fairly easy fight. Due to the sheer number of people all trying to do the story or other dungeons, the instance servers got bombed. As a result, everyone on early access spent hours sitting at a NPC trying to enter the instance, skipping a cutscene, and then getting kicked out with an error. Some servers tried to be nice and have people line up. We all made jokes about how the NPC was the hardest boss ever to be released in the game, and in retrospect it's funny in one of kinds of ways.
