Spoiler for Doki Doki Literature Club, again :
I figured out that Monika was some sort of omniscient being by early in act 2, but the way it all came together still surprised me. I actually got taken back a bit when she referred to me by name. Fuck the fan pack, I would straight up pay $10 for dump of all the things she says in the Monika Zone.
Spoiler :
I screwed up and didn't realize my character was male or anything, so I used my own name in the first place.
But I heard about this happening to other people. So at some point she uses the user name of the person on the computer?

I think there's a couple different things that can happen here.
Spoiler :
I've heard that she can pull your Windows user name, your computer name, or your SteamID, or... none of the above? In my case, she said something like "I bet you call yourself Main or something," which I didn't think was something I had configured, so maybe that happened 'cause my AV software broke her script or 'cause I have the game installed on D: instead of C:.

Yeah, I'll have to see what happens when I go for the good ending.

:holmes FALCON'S 2018 PREVIEW :holmes

It's a new year, so here's a summary of the games on my radar with release dates likely to be in 2018.

MARCH 27
Far Cry 5
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdaoe4hbMso

I didn't think I would be interested in another Far Cry game, I didn't play Primal or FC4. Then the early footage of this one came out and I thought it's an interesting setting, and potentially enough to get me back in. I'm not going in early on this one though, I'll wait to see what reviews are like before I dive in. It could also be a Wildlands situation where I'm pretty 'meh' on the idea but my flatmate wants to co-op it. That could pull me too.

QUARTER ONE
Into the Breach
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJR1OpHNgzc

It's a game by the makers of FTL about kaiju attacking cities, and you deploy mecha to stop them. The interesting mechanic here is that the kaiju announce their planned actions, then you deploy and announce your actions before it plays out. Unlike other games to use this system though, your actions happen before their actions, so the gameplay is basically puzzles where you try to minimise the damage these creatures do to cities.

QUARTER ONE
Dead in Vinland
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m07unNZECGY

The art style in this game is very Banner Saga, which is an instant draw, but instead of a hopeless quest against the end of the world, it's a survival management game about a family stuck on an island. I'm not sure how deep or compelling the gameplay will be, but this kind of game is up my alley so I'm looking forward to playing around with it.

SOMETIME THIS YEAR
State of Decay 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0qgL-6w22M

I loved the first State of Decay, the focus on survival and building up a base was great, especially since they didn't give you any perfect base option. The limited resources across the map, hordes and special zombies kept you worried like you should be in a zombie survival game, but at the same time the character traits and interactions got you invested. I'm eager to see what they do the second time around. The biggest issue is that it's coming to Windows Store on PC and no-one wants that.
XBONE / WINDOWS STORE

SOMETIME THIS YEAR
Vampyr
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB7eSb12CIo

It's the main DONTNOD crew's next game after Life is Strange. It's hard to know how good this one will be since they're going more actiony again, but I did enjoy Remember Me so I'll probably like this one too. Basically you're a dcotor in Victorian England who is also a Vampire, so you have to balance your reputation by healing people with your need to feed.

SOMETIME THIS YEAR
Arcadian Atlas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RIIze_PhfM

It's pretty much Final Fantasy Tactics. I mean look at it! I am well in on this! It was a kickstarter making it less likely to be fully realised than if it were from a proper studio, but if it does see the light of day I'm excited to get into it. I'll make the Falcon fencing school and use 100% fencers :pac

MAYBE THIS YEAR
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ohvkb3F-hqY

It's Koji Igarashi's kickstarted Symphony of the Night-like. He changed developers early in the process and it looks like he's found the right team to realise his vision now. I'm very invested in this game and am hoping to see the high levels of polish and finishing that we had in Symphony to really cement this as the SotN for the new age. If this one doesn't come out this year I'll be even more psyched because of how much polish that suggests is going to be shined onto this game.
PS4 / XBONE / WiiU / SWITCH / STEAM

MAYBE THIS YEAR
Banner Saga 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByqmJfKvKLM

If you know about Banner Saga you'll be into it, and it should be out this year. It's a turn-based tactics game in a Norse-themed world where they go hard on the common themes of Norse sagas, dread and nihilism. It's not about getting rich, or getting even. You're just trying to survive and keep your friends alive. Amazing art, amazing soundtrack, this game is the whole package and the end of the trilogy.

What games are y'all looking forward to?

I've got Alliance Alive and the Strange Journey remake on pre-order. Those are first quarter 2018, I believe. I know nothing of AA except that people seem excited about it and I love the 3DS, so I'm sure I'll like it.

The Persona 3 and 5 dance games are also coming out May 24th in Japan. I expect that the Western release will be about 2-3 months later, based on the fact that development is finished, according to an article I read, and the turn around time for the P4 dance game was less than 3 months.

Considering the dude behind Alliance Alive I hope it does well. I didn't play the first Persona dancing game and I doubt I'll play the new ones either, but I'll definitely be paying attention to the P3 dancer at least just for all the updated design work. Put FemMC in and maybe I'll buy it, Atlus, okay?

I want to believe in Far Cry 5, but there's so many ways it could fall flat, especially after Austin's intimations regarding studio turnover on a recent Waypoint Radio.

I knew the FTL folks were working on something new but I had no idea it would be that. I'll keep my eye on it. At the very least, it should mean we're getting another great soundtrack.

I have State of Decay in my library but I've never started it. The concept is solid enough to get me over my disinterest in zombies, but yeah, I think the sequel may have lost me the moment you said "Windows Store."

Vampyr looks like it could be amazing and the setting alone sounds worth the price of admission. WW1-era London in the midst of an influenza epidemic, plus vampires? You don't see that every day.

I still need to finish Banner Saga 2 but 3 is for sure on my list. It's one of the few games series I've loved despite the combat system never quite clicking with me, just because the art design and storytelling make up for the battles so completely.

Anyway, as for a few of my own 2018 picks... assuming these come out... and are good... I'll be cribbing from Polygon's list for this post.

Anthem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5GSfs9fi4

I really, really want this to be good, partially because Bioware could really use the win right now, but also 'cause while games like Destiny and Warframe have never clicked with me enough to really try 'em out, Anthem looks like it has most of the pieces in place to change that.

Metro Exodus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F87ky5KNGGY

Like many other things, I've never played a previous Metro game despite somehow owning both of them. On paper they should be my jam. In practice? I dunno. This one could be a great starting point though as it kinda looks like it's spending more time on the surface than underground.

Mineko's Night Market
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQRdJ1G-SGQ

Cats!

But also I guess this is going to be an Animal Crossing sorta thing and I'm always down for a fresh one of those even if Pocket Camp has already kinda lost me a little but more importantly LOOK AT ALL THE CATS and also this thing looks stylish as hell.

Monster Hunter World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2ohXbAG2Dc

I too would be more likely to actually play a Monster Hunter game if it were called Monster Hunter Y'all. But since it isn't, Monster Hunter World looks close enough to finally getting me in, thanks maybe a little to it having a PC version this time around, but probably mostly 'cause it's full of the kinda accessibility and QOL improvements that I've always felt the series has sorely lacked.

Sea of Thieves
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbE8BnO6oug

Multiplayer co-op pirate adventures on the high seas! It'll have a Windows version, which I hope isn't a Windows Store exclusive, but ehhhhh we'll find out. Normally just the phrase "a game made by Rare" is enough for me to make a bunch of pavlovian response fart noises and then fall asleep standing, but boy does it look like they might finally be onto something here.

Valkyria Chronicles 4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_otGpDTvbM

I doubt this makes it out in 2018, but man I hope it does if it's indeed a back to basics return to form for this series, which is too damn cool to only have one truly great game in its franchise.

SoulCalibur 6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1sdAmSq4vs

Despite all its various minor-to-moderate issues - weird customization, aimless progression, incomplete story modes, chasing DOA's fan service with hilarious/creepy-ass results, writing its title as a single word one of which is always misspelled - I do still love me some SoulCalibur Soul Caliber and I'm really happy to see it return, like Valkyria Chronicles, if they can get it right and especially if they can make the series feel relevant again.

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnznWYE_wxc

I knew nothing about this or even knew it existed until I started poking through the Polygon list, but the concept alone sounds strong enough to be worth a look.

Mostly, I'm looking forward to Last of Us 2, Thor of War, and Days Gone, but I'm also hoping for Alliance Alive to come out soon and be good.

Edit: Thor of War? Hmm. Fitting.

Is Anthem due this year? I'm still willing to give Bioware the benefit of the doubt and get excited for it.

Possibly, though if it was just announced at E3 2017 then I could totally see it missing the 2018 window. Same goes for Metro and probably a few other things on the list.

I really bounced off the Metro games, probably won't go for the new Metro though it's interesting the setting change.
