Gladiators just came back from an 0-2 map deficit to tie up their series with Philly and force a fifth map, so avoiding 4-0 sweeps is totes a possibility - at least in matches between two middle-of-the-pack teams like these, anyway.

psst hey John your Shanghai Dragons play Florida today, hashtag battle of the 0-3s, hashtag race to the bottom, etc.
also lol Dallas getting dunked on everywhere
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnHEBxSgDgM
one of their dudes (xqc) apparently got pretty homophobic towards another player so I guess we're about to see how OWL deals with toxic shit at the professional level.

He's being pulled from Dallas' next game at least. I can't imagine anything more than a slap on the wrist at this stage.

Update!
https://overwatchleague.com/en-us/news/ ... -and-fined
4-game suspension and a $2,000 fine. Not a bad opening salvo from the league; $2k would be no thang if this were the NFL or NHL or whatever, but that should be a pretty noticeable dent in the salary of an e-sports player.
Hopefully it's enough to send a message and I wonder if commentary will bring it up.
e: lol, Dallas is now doubling-down on OWL's suspension, sidelining xQc for the rest of Stage 1. He won't play again until late February at the earliest.

LA Valiant did good work against the Spitfire. Still a 3-2 finish for London, but this is hardest we've seen one of the full South Korean rosters pushed by a North American team. Shouldn't be too long before someone hands 'em their first L.

Here's a good longread on the problems of "big personalities" in young leagues like OWL.
https://www.heroesneverdie.com/2018/1/2 ... punishment
...although the article considers the xQc situation to be done, folks in other threads have pointed out that he continues to be an asshat on his personal streams, Overwatch subreddits, Twitter, blah blah blah, which makes me wonder if he's trying too hard to be one of those "big personalities" or trying to get himself fired for the severance (which he probably wouldn't get since he'd be fired on Code of Conduct violations.)
A transfer window for trades and (supposedly) drafts from... wherever OWL teams draft from... does exist, so it's not like he can't be replaced.

He could just be an awful prat unused to long-term repercussions, which is my Occam's Razor solution to the "mystery" of xQc.

Hah. Also this.
Sports and even some eSports (mainly fighting games) can seemingly support "big personalities", "trash talk" and even "controversy" on the professional level without delving into homophobia or other forms of discrimination.
Of course, like most future utopian settings extolling the benefits of cooperation and diversity, somehow Overwatch has managed to gather a fandom comprised of the Worst People Ever.

But also a sizeable army of really cool artists and cosplayers, or Best People Ever. It's a pretty unusual range for a fandom. I guess... Mass Effect is kinda close? A little more Adventure Time than Rick & Morty?
I like to switch to Mei and spam the "chill out!" voiceline whenever people get unchill.

one of the raisins why I tend to side-eye people who are a little too into memes
https://compete.kotaku.com/racist-jokes ... 1822376195
I didn't know the pepe sign got confiscated, and the league (or its individual franchises) has pushed back against instances of the fucking stupid knuckles meme, so that's cool
I guess this is always gonna be a bigger issue with e-sports than other sports and stuff just by nature, but hopefully if OWL and the teams keep drawing lines in the sand it'll eventually become more like WWE or something, where the worst you see or hear from fans and players is like, outdated references like the gangnam style dance, or hatchet clown signs, or whatever
also the weekly recap show dunked on xQc a little and I got a good laugh at that.

(*ugly sobbing*)

Oh shit, is that today? This week? Bloody hell.
I had myself a super fast steamroller game on Hanamura attack last night, I think we must've finished the whole map in less than three minutes, which is a really nice feeling when it happens, but is totally random, at least in pubbie arcade games. Seoul (or any of the top three really) can probably do that at will vs. Shanghai.
As Watchpoint mentions, the Shanghai GM actually apologized/took responsibility for their performance thus far, which... might be premature? Hmm.

I mean, in theory, Shanghai is a Chinese all-star team, so they should maybe not be losing all their games like this. If the players are technically proficient and aren't doing anything obviously stupid or bad in-game, then blame leans towards coaching, tactics and administration.
I don't know enough about OW to say if Shanghai play particularly
badly and whether that's mostly on them.
Also lol:
Overwatch League Commissioner Just Hasn't 'Gotten Around' To Posting Code Of Conduct
Re: [Overwatch] Del & John vs. OWL

Shanghai has made at least a few notable gaffes, such as the infamous "C9" blunder (accidentally wandering off the point in the middle of overtime for no particular raisin, or sometimes as an overreaction to an enemy ult - this is named after the defunct team Cloud 9 which did this three times in one match), but they aren't alone in these mistakes.
I think their biggest issues are probably administrative and maybe comms. Rumour has it their training schedule is/was a little too insane, like 15 hours daily with inadequate downtime. I think they may have signed a lot of underage players too, so they might be waiting on a bunch of 18th birthdays 'til they can get to 100%. On paper they should at least be better than Dallas right now if they can solve some of these problems.
"the next few months" is a helluva long wait for a CoC considering at least one player has already been fined and suspended.

Shanghai is showing a lot of improvement. I doubt they're gonna take a map from Seoul but if they keep up this work they shouldn't be stuck at the bottom for long.
