And Dissidia is out soon!

...I hope it isn't terrible.

I watched Giant Bomb play a little of that earlier on Unprofessional Fridays and it looks like a hot mess. But arena fighters/brawlers have never been my thing. If it were a traditional 1v1 fighter I'd probably be into it.

Funny you should mention XII. I just started playing it on PS4.

As long as it's a "fun" hot mess a la the first two Marvel VS. Capcoms, I can work with it.

Please consult your physician to make sure Dissidia is right for you.

Some games are indeed pretty heavy on the explody effects.

But I agree, I would have preferred a traditional 3D fighter model like Tekken. Hell, why not super high-def 2D like Blazblue? It's a niche genre, sure, but the only people who are going to get amped for a Final Fantasy crossover are already down with the niche.

Lol. I remember liking the original PSP one despite hating fighting games. I got by well enough. How many more are there now? Is this the 3rd or 4th? ... or later?

I think it's technically a port of the 3rd, but they've combined every character and stage from the previous games so it's kinda all-in-one at this point.

honestly I think all fighters at this point should be Tekken systems + Soul Calibur character customization + Mortal Kombat 9+/Injustice (?) story modes, then just apply whatever aesthetics you want on top of that. That combo would make a helluva Final Fantasy fighter.

Yess! I've been waiting for this. I played like 1/3 or 1/2 of FF12 on Playstation back when it came out, and I'm totally keen to give it another shot now that it's PCed!

What the - new game minus is a mode where you don't gain XP? That is weird AF.

Also what bonuses are there to new game+, should I start in that mode or just regular mode?

I haven't played XII since it came out in... 2006? ...and I'm not even sure if it was in that version but I'm guessing NG+ here works more or less the same as it does in most RPGs of the era: carried-over items, gear, levels, stats, etc.

I'd probably only start with NG+ turned on if you already know the combat and character progression isn't for you and therefore don't care about challenge or natural buildup and stuff. That said, I think the turbo toggle can be used in all modes, if you just wanna speed up combat and traversal.

Grabbed XII since it has that launch week discount which also stacks with my Humble discount. As a result it was like $20+ cheaper than the PS4 version, which is still like $60+ CDN on PSN right now, christ.

Big download though. Bigger than expected. 30GB or so? That's them remastered textures at work.

Let me know if the PC version has any weird issues I should be aware of, Falc.

Haven't encountered any yet, the steam community seems to have issues with sound not happening quite often, but I've been all good.

The keyboard controls are very weird, so controller if you can.

The environment textures look like they've been run through photoshop sharpening, but it's kind of an interesting stylistic choice.

Also I love stealing the skin right off a rat.

Vaan is guilty of war crimes against the rodentia of Rabanastre!

I'm trying to remember what combos I set up in the gambit system, I think I had something like 'enemy :100% health > steal' on my controlled character and 'enemy: party leader target > attack' on the others, so that I would at least try to steal once from everything.

As I am want to do, I looked up some guides on class combos and settled on:

Vaan - Knight / Bushido
Penelo - Shikari / Foebreaker
Basch - Uhlan / Time Mage
Fran - Red Mage / Archer
Ashe - Monk / Black Mage
Balthier - White Mage / Machinist

Almost immediately I discovered this hurts me controlling Balthier with my early gambit setup, he is set to heal anyone under 50% hp but the others then can't attack his target so they wait. I guess I could counter that with an additional last gambit that just says 'enemy: nearest > attack'.

I went blind and didn't spend any time studying all that info on the board, so I basically went with their roles in the group. Then doled out the rest based on what sounded like a good fit.

Vaan - Shikari/Uhlan
Penelo - White Mage(good to have a healer that early)/Black Mage
Balthier - Machinist/Bushido
Fran - Archer/Time Mage
Basch - Knight/Foebreaker
Ashe - Red Mage/Monk

From my experience, Vaan makes a better Thief, due to his speed, but I didn't check stats before assigning roles, so maybe the Machinist is just slow.

Yeah the guides I was looking at were speed focused, some to the point of complaining that Balthier's gun animation is the slowest, and Fran's bow animation is the slowest so they shouldn't be those classes. If you're obsessed about frames of animation for optimising your class build, you've lost me. I'm not getting that crazy about it.

It's an interesting experiment in self-control that there are just options in the menu for "max my LP" and "max my Gil". While the LP one doesn't really tempt me, I find myself rationalising that most stuff you buy is moderated by story progression, so I'm not really breaking TOO much by having unlimited money.

All those forgotten grimoires or w/e that increase drop rates for different monster types are hella expensive and tempting though.

I am so have with Clan Points and Money, I'm not worried. I always explore heavily, and seek to fill up my monster list, so it always works out fine. I just completed the Raithwall's tomb segment, and I've already got over 200k Clan Points. I'm set for several Clan levels, without even having fought enough Hunts.

Edit: I am basically in that sections where I intend to go everywhere except where the plot tells me. You know, basic RPG player stuff. I'm currently at the camp in the Babbling Vale in the Mosphoran Highwaste.

Comedy option: go as long as possible without setting a class for Vaan because fuck Vaan.

I'm considering mixing it up constantly and using everyone. Do the people not in your party also level up? If I do have to pick a party it will be a weird Ashe (Monk/Black Mage) tank with Balthier (white/machine) and Fran (Red/Archer) sitting back dropping the deeps. I call it the yolo offense.

Since I'm picking Monk first on Ashe she's going to be getting used to tanking anyway.

I haven't played the OG FFXII since 2006 but I kinda remember people on standby still get LP but not XP? I don't know if that's changed.

I'll probably end up using the same main squad (squad) that you are, though possibly swapping Fran for Penelo, or keeping Ashe and Balthier as my two constants with a situational rotating third chair.

Ashe will absolutely be my party leader the second she shows up. Way back when, I had her built to use katanas, so now that we've got the job system I think I'll make her Bushi/Mage, just a matter of deciding which flavour of mage. I think I probably want White/Black on other characters, so she'll likely get a more utility-based mage class as her secondary, perhaps a Red or Time.

(Self: Libra) is pretty good, especially if you're rolling with mages. I got owned by the werewolves in Giza Plains, I had forgotten they sometimes put way overlevelled mobs just in amongst weak ones. I had saved recently and it auto-saves when you change zones so it was no big deal.

Libra could have saved me though.
