The Helmet Person art on the countdown site updated. Ain't no Lassic. Oh well. Whatever, it's fine. It's fine! It's fine.

Other game stuff... that giant new No Man's Sky update goes up on Tuesday. I'll totally check that out, probably rolling a new character in the process. I've been poking at the current pre-update version a bit also just to re-familiarize myself with the basics, and to have that contrast when everything changes.

Yo Falcon, when you played NMS way back when, did it lock your FPS to 30 on planets? It's been doing that to me and I'm not sure why. Maybe I made some sorta ill-advised .ini edit in the game files to get it running okay when the game launched 'cause it was just that rough back then.

Oh, I guess Banner Saga 3 is out this week too, huh. I still gotta finish 2. That'll be a stream series at some point I think. Console players can also pick up all three games in a trilogy bundle when BS3 comes out on Thursday. Get 'em, they're good.

Stardew Valley also has its big multiplayer update hitting its stable branch on August 1st, but that's also when Yakuza 0 releases on Steam, so that'll be my whole day right there.

I don't recall, I'm not really a framerate purist so even if it did I probably didn't notice. The only time I really notice framerates over 30 is when a game shifts from 60 to 30 (DA:I cutscenes) and back to 60.

Looks like adaptive vsync was the culprit so I turned it off. Felt kinda weird running at 60 or close to it in space and then seeing the framerate cut itself in half like that on the ground.

I'm finally starting to see some of the really cool looking planets everyone else was getting. When I dipped my toe into NMS a couple years back it was like, a parade of toxic green sludge planets or barren rocks with spitting plants or magma or too many sentinels. But now I'm getting lush red grass flowing in the wind and actual trees and wild sunsets.

I feel like Starbound always gave you a relatively easy and green planet to start on and NMS probably should've done the same. Inventory management is still bad, but I keep running into drop pods which sell storage expansions, so that's nice, plus maybe tomorrow's update will help QOL in this area too. All the animals look like they were generated by Spore in 2009. Again, tomorrow's update might help that a lot, especially 'cause it seems to be adding support for megafauna. (And megaflora, hopefully.)

...I also hope they kill the plutonium requirement for takeoff. Anyway. NMS is clicking with me better now than it did before. I have no idea how much of that is thanks to whatever's been added by the last few updates, 'cause I haven't been keeping track of what's been in those. But the main exploration loop and mild questing is great for killing a podcast backlog.

Alright, I'm reinstalling NMS. I wonder if anyone found my Suikoden themed systems. Tir, Pahn, Cleo, Gremio... they made great planet names.

Waypoint's deep dives on NMS stuff recently really inspired me to give it another shot. Pretty glad I did.

I should probably get back to Shadowrun Dragonfall for the same raisins since it's their 101 pick right now.

Man it was a bit rough loading back into where I left it. Took me a while to figure out how to even take off, then after I figured out how to fire up the pulse drive I was immediately pulled out of it by bandits, so I was being shot at by 4 ships while I tried to figure out how to even fire at things.

Also the flying didn't have flight controls, tried to invert them and I'm pretty sure it didn't even change. I'm flying into a lot of things right now.

Found myself in the Suikoden IV system, but all the planets had generic names when I scanned them, so I wondered if there were just a ton of planets since I'd already named six. Turns out the names just didn't take when scanned in the ship, but showed in the system view.

I did find that I'd already named a bunch of stuff on the first planet I re-landed on, including these cuties:

Most of this system is a hellscape though, extreme radiation, blizzards, and just dead worlds. I should move on.

pssh, boring. all the anime things look the same now, you could put like a dozen other franchise logos on that and I'd never know the difference.

Phantasy Star hasn't had a visual identity of its own since PSO and that's part of the problem. And I wasn't even the biggest PSO guy or anything but yo PSO had a look. The art for this new thing could be from anything, much like almost everything else PS has done since the Dreamcast.

Star Ocean and Xeno and Phantasy Star are the only sci-fi-ish JRPGs going that I can think of and they all look totally interchangeable now. Shit, pull out the sci-fi, that splash could be from a Tales or a Fire Emblem or whatever. Battle Casual motherfucker over there in the v-neck may as well have stepped out on coffee break from effin' Devil Survivor.

OLD MAN POST

e: oh christ it's even worse in motion. all the in-game character animation is like something out of a Newgrounds flash game from 2004.

so anyway

the No Man's Sky NEXT update is up

my D&D is cancelled tonight on account of the heat so I guess I'll wrap myself in sheets of ice and jump into the void for a while

e: should break for a bit sometime to check out Hammond in Overwatch and check back on the SMT mobile gacha, assuming it doesn't burn my phone to a crisp. I wish they had just gone full 2D with it like FEH.

NMS:Next stream tonight?

Crowd source the names of everything on your planet.

There's some fun unexpected stuff in the NMS Next patch notes:
Mission types have been expanded, with photography, feeding, freighter attack and defence, archaeology, and specialised hunting missions now available.
Play Pokemon Snap in No Man's Sky! Then go RP as Picard!
The universe is more diverse than ever with colour palette variety, dense forests and large trees, and abandoned and empty systems.
This excites me more than it should, maybe just 'cause it was getting weird seeing the same trading posts and prefab buildings everywhere, almost like Mass Effect 1's sidequest planets. Finally getting whole planets and systems with no advanced life or tech will really help the feeling of discovery and exploration which this game is already pretty good at.
Some creature types will herd together, grazing and fleeing from danger as a group.

Creatures now respond more enthusiastically to being fed, recognising you as a friend and alerting nearby creatures to the food source.
look man I already have goats in real life okay

Star Ocean is gonna win the sci-fi RPG wars through attrition, baby!

Phantasy Star needs to embrace its hey-day and go full 80s/early 90s sci-fi anime designs, no matter the gameplay style.

If it really feels like the Genesis games, like that article suggested, I will be quite happy. Now we just need an old school-style Shining Force gatcha...

Yeah it was one of my bugbears with the OG No Man's Sky, you're travelling to 'uncharted systems' and finding a bunch of buildings often with aliens inside them on EVERY planet. Made me feel like a space-jerk flying in saying "I name this planet Gremio!" when there are clearly already sentient lifeforms living here and flying in the atmosphere.

Give me life, but also give me deaath.

Fuckin' A. And it wouldn't even be that crazy for 'em to retain their older aesthetic, right? I feel like sci-fi anime stuff like Gundam or whatever has always done exactly that, just with minor nips/tucks, kinda like the new Star Wars films or something.

Go figure, Jeff and Brad hit these same points 100% on the Bombcast this week, so big ups to 'em on that, buy those duders a drink next time they're in the Hunter's Guild.

Steam preload for Yakuza 0 is up, weighing in about about 18.5GB. Dunno when the unlock happens. Different folks handle the timezones differently.

Star Traders Frontiers is out of Early Access after something like 88 updates across less than a year, which feels like a record. I haven't touched it since very early on so I'm looking forward to seeing everything that's changed. Someday.

The multiplayer update for Stardew Valley is also out of beta. That could be a really fun chill hang. Someday.

Everything I'm poking at currently ranges in length from dozens of hours to infinity, so

I guess Doctor Who games are a thing again... sort of?

I'd like to think the universe whisked this into reality as a direct result of me remastering and republishing Layfield's review of Eternity Clock.
