This one might be a (rather sad and uncomfortable) must-watch. Full doc in late May.

Nice, gonna pass that on to Mike. The new graphics really do look a hell of a lot better. I wonder why the Switch release is a week later, though?

Dunno, I've seen a bunch of games with later releases on Switch but I couldn't tell you why.

out today: Yakuza Kiwami 2 on Steam, so that's the whole rest of my month right there, and also Life is Strange 2 Episode 3. So I'm reminded that I still haven't run through Episode 2 yet. I had intended to do that on stream but technical issues and work schedules keep conflicting.

Astrologaster might also be worth a look if y'all want something completely different. It bills itself as "a story-driven astrological comedy set in Shakespeare’s London" so, y'know, one of those.

I hope you grab Kiwami 2 quickly and post a lot of thoughts. Do a twitter thread on it. Or stream it, but I know, I know.

I picked it up early for the preload and the free DLC, though seems like the DLC will remain free for at least a week post-launch, which is a neat thing Sega does these days.

from what I understand some of the DLC is really super useful too, or at least the extra Clan Creator pieces.

FINALLY some news. But someone pointed out that all the footage is still in Midgar... which is concerning. However, there's more info in June, and Sony even said something about plans until launch, which means... hopefully... that a launch date is actually in mind?

What would be your thoughts if they pulled an FF 13 and remade the game as a linear story without the open world aspect?

For my part, I 100% expect this or something similar and anyone expecting a 1:1 or even a 1:quite-close remaster is being slightly naive. It's a complete remake that will change the game entirely to fit into the aesthetic and themes of the greater Final Fantasy 7 continuity, of which FF7 became the least important influencing factor about a decade ago.

Like, how will the world map look? Fort Condor mini game? Snowboarding? Can't wait for Mr. Dolphin in 4k? Ummm, they'll all look like NOTHING.

Yeah I'd prefer a linear story that cuts out a lot of the padding the original had, but there's prob a whole bunch of folks that expect every little thing to be included.

I'm expecting a pretty straight forward run of the story, with very little else; that seems to be what they have implied. Maybe a little running around for grinding, but they could easily make leveling entirely unimportant. It should be interesting to see what they do with the Honey Bee plot, though.

I already know that the battle system will be a little different, but honestly that's a good thing. The ATB didn't age well for me, and I can't complete replays of the games that used it these days. I just hope that it's still playable and not too hard for me, since I'm still a turn-based player for the most part.

As for every other aspect, um, at least it looks pretty? And honestly, I hated some of those mini games. On my Vita I have the digital version of FF7 and I left off at the military drill part where you have to time your steps. I hope that shit's gone! And yeah, the dolphin and CPR thing... fuck that. (I bet they'll leave the slap fight in though, for raisins).

Agreed on ATB, that system was probably already dated by the time VII came out the first time. It's also like 75% of the raisin why VIII and IX can be such slogs sometimes. If they were going turn-based again it would be nice to have the FFX system back since that's still my favourite FF combat, but throwing VII's characters into a modified version of XV's action-y battlin' should be fine too.

Heh, dolphin CPR. That will be a cutscene this time, I'm willing to bet on it. As will the march at Junon and undoubtedly a bunch of other things. If they tried to 1:1 adapt a game as large and varied and full of weird tangents like Final Fantasy VII on XV's scale it would probably either never come out or come out four times over budget and sink the company. Square's had enough bad luck there already.

There's almost no way this remake will be anything other than a critical path retelling of the original core story with maybe some cherry-picked sidequest stuff. And that's fine, it doesn't really need to be more than that. Let the whiners whine, they were already gonna do that anyway.

...okay, actual trailer thoughts:

- Biggs! Wedge! Jessie! They all look great! Shame about their bad luck!

- All VA in English maybe means this thing is a little farther along than we thought? Maybe not. It all sounds fine though. Barrett might be a bit odd maybe. I didn't recognize much or any of the lines but there's no way they're reusing the old script without a rewrite and relocalization anyway.

- There's some little touches in there tying back to the old battle stuff with a nice and shiny 21st century polish, most notably one of Cloud's limit breaks. I forget the name. You know the one. That one.

- It's suuuuper weird seeing those old enemy designs remade in new tech without a whole lot of redesign work. I kinda figured they'd throw out a lot of that stuff and start over, but pretty much every enemy in that trailer is from OG VII, including the first boss at the reactor.

- Where's that Sephiroth bit at the end come from originally? It's hard to tell from the surroundings. Looks like it's still in Midgar and not from the Kalm flashback or later.

To answer your last question, I'm guessing still Midgar? The guy that said that all the footage of the trailer was from Midgar seemed pretty knowledgeable, and then there's that bomb countdown. I vaguely remember that before one of the plates fell.

Hmm, interesting, if it really is in Midgar then it must be an added scene, 'cause I can't remember them meeting face to face that early outside the flashback. I could also see them moving pieces of that flashback around to spread it out a little, too, rather than keeping the huge infodump in one place.

Lotta bombs in this game, so that could be a separate thing and maybe the bit with Sephiroth could be from the end of the Kalm flashback, so maybe it's actually at the Nibelheim reactor five years prior? Boy it's been a while since I replayed VII.

It's been a long time for me too, but man, I really DO hope they spread that Kalm flashback out more. That part sucked. Maybe the nuances like this is what's making this remake take so fucking long XD

Wouldn't be surprised if Midgar got super extended and all ancillary towns got cut except for maybe Wutai and Junon.

I wouldn't want the other settlements to be cut, but I do remember wanting to check out some of the other parts of Midgar when I was a kid. For such a massive place you only explore a small portion in the first game (don't know about the sequels and movies).

I don't think they can cut that deeply unless they're fundamentally rewriting the story. Kalm could probably go and other ways could be found to relay that flashback information. But Junon, Corel/Gold Saucer, Cosmo Canyon, Rocket Town, and Icicle Inn probably all count as critical path, too much happens in 'em. Hell, same for Mideel even, I think.

Costa del Sol and Gongaga could go, as could Wutai. If you count Fort Condor as a town, same there, even more so. I wouldn't want to lose either Costa or Wutai but the former is a pitstop and the latter is the only town with no main story relevance - unless they add some. (They should keep both just for environmental variance.)

The easiest route would be to simply add new missions at the very start of the story that send them to other parts of the city before shit goes cray cray. But you're right, it all depends how much they want to spend in Midgar at the expense of the rest of the world.

Corel is a flashback. Kalm is a wrapper for the Sephiroth flashback. I don't think places like that will be retconned out of existence but they can easily be cutscenes only.

But then I genuinely feel this game is gonna get hella rewritten and restructured outside of the Key Scenes.

Corel's also where they dump you after things go south at the Saucer since that thing was pretty much built right over it. It's a prison at that point, but the layout was the same. It's not a place they'd cut unless Barrett's story gets reworked.

(And maybe it should; Barrett in general is an extremely 90s character across the board. But this trailer kinda gives me the impression they're playing him pretty straight down his original path, for better or worse.)

North Corel could go, though, come to think of it - that's pretty much just a trolley station with a tent city.

Another ten games announced for the Genesis Mini:
- Mega Man: The Wily Wars
- Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition
- Sonic Spinball
- Phantasy Star IV
- Beyond Oasis
- Ghouls 'N Ghosts
- Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
- Golden Axe
- Vectorman
- Wonder Boy in Monster World
As before, it's a mix of the familiar and the surprising. A lot of these have been in most/all of the previous Genesis collections, but this is definitely a first for Wily Wars and Street Fighter 2 and maybe Ghouls 'n Ghosts? All three are Capcom as well, not to be outdone by Konami's contributions announced earlier.

Wily Wars is the most interesting addition because that's actually a compilation of the first three NES Mega Man games. It's also a cart that never left Japan as a physical product; it was a Sega Channel exclusive in North America. Go figure.

Any version of Street Fighter 2 with a three-button controller is gonna feel somewhat suboptimal, at least to its biggest fans, but apparently the (North American) Mini will support six-button pads somehow. As it should, since the Japanese version gets a six-button pad by default, so all the necessary software support should already be there anyway.
