So, Niantic is making a Harry Potter version of Pokemon Go? When did this happen?

Sounds like it'll be hitting NZ and AU first, so you gonna guinea pig for us, Falc?

Considering I've seen only the first movie and read none of the books, I don't suppose I will.

Eh, 's fine. I'm super Luke warm on it, any way. I dropped Go a long time ago, and just removed FEH and that other Gacha RPG I played a few times.

Has anyone played a recent Total War entry? Their newest is based on the Three Kingdoms legend, a setting I always love. But I haven't played the franchise in literally 15 years (I think my last one was Rome I).

It's getting pretty good reviews, but I'm mostly wondering: How complicated are the game's systems and how fast/slow do battles and events move?

I know nothing about how Total War typically plays but the Three Kingdoms setting and all the buzz has put it on my radar as well, which is more than I've ever been able to say about Total War before. ...or other things using Three Kingdoms, either. I've usually always found the Romance games too dense and the Dynasty Warriors games too shallow.

Rob Zacny's review is a good read. It sounds like there's a tad more Crusader Kings-ish politicking in this one than is normal for Total War so maybe that's partly why it's grabbed my attention.

Hmm.

I tried to play the fan-translated version of the OG SNES Star Ocean a little while back and bounced off it very hard so boy I hope this version is better than that.

also, I guess this is a remake of a remake?

First Departure is a lot closer to original Star Ocean 2 than the game it's a remake of, for sure.

Assuming it's not a full priced game, I'm interested. Then again, Square Enix...

Star Ocean's never quite clicked with me for some raisin. Maybe I just don't click with the aesthetic, but it also seems like it tries to go a bit more comedic than other JRPGs.

I could never get into Star Ocean either.

Y'all are banana fritters. Star Ocean is like Phantasy Star but good, Star Trek but with societal commentary, Star Wars but with exciting space battles.

Or it's a very mixed bag.

Star Ocean is a series that on paper should appeal to way more people than it does, but for some raisin just doesn't. It's constantly slightly less than the sum of its parts.

I'd broadly agree. It tends to choose to lean on its least interesting aspects. (SO4 is good though waaahhhhh)

A Switch exclusive no longer:

...but I feel like this one kinda came and went with zero fanfare, like I wasn't even sure the Switch original was out yet 'til I looked it up.

Pretty sure this is the first I've heard of a sequel.

Star Ocean is to Phantasy Star as Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is to Star Trek

...

Star Ocean is to Phantasy Star as Starcrash is to Star Wars
Spoiler :
(Star Ocean is better than those analogies I just can't think of more suitable ones at the moment)

Oh yeah, regarding Three Kingdoms as a setting, here's a really great episode of Three Moves Ahead on the topic

Star Ocean is to Phantasy Star as Voyager is to TNG.

I would mark Phantasy Star ahead of Star Ocean just because of PSU, I guess. But remove that doping from the equation and PS falls hard.

Question. Have you ever played Phantasy Star IV?

Thanks for the link! Podcast was a lot of fun. I do love how many of the most beloved characters in that setting weren't even alive at the same time but have been combined anyway for entertainment effect.

Okay, I'll cop to that. The first six years of Phantasy Star were pretty great. It's the 26 (!) after that that are the problem. That's a sub-Simpsons ratio.

Like any great work, it has to start from a base of truth, or at least honesty.

I think Star Ocean does cool anime Star Trek when it bothers to focus on that and middling "underdeveloped planet" tales outside of that. Rankings and complaints from me aside, I find them fairly consistent in overall quality.

I think Phantasy Star is good in the way I think the Shining series is good (as a person who will say Shining Force 2 is their favorite game of all time); by silently meaning only a segment of the series that is further and further in the past and a smaller and smaller part of the overall "franchise" as time marches on.

Also in reality, like, all I can say is which I like more because they're not even the same type of RPG. It's like comparing raktajino and self-sealing stem bolts.
