Re: [Game News] + General Gamesy Chatter
Nominees for the Keighley's the Game Awards 2019 are up
https://thegameawards.com/nominees
My money's on Control winning several of the categories it's up for (in particular GOTY, Action/Adventure, and Audio Design.) The Outer Worlds is the only GOTY nominee I've played, and I dig it, but it's not gonna be my GOTY let alone take the biggest award at an awards show. But who knows, I'm usually wrong in these predictions.
Apex Legends for Action, Sayonara Wild Hearts for Art Direction... but it should go to Gris.
I've got no real opinion on the community/esports/content creator awards other than OWL being the only esports thing I watch and Goldenboy is cool. If there were any amazing community management responses to situations which warranted them this year I either missed them or they got drowned-out in the noise of all the bad ones.
Luigi's Mansion could take Family Game based on recency bias. Super Mario Maker 2 didn't quite hit full force and Smash feels slightly less "family" than the others. Whatever the case, it's a straight Nintendo category this year.
Fighting Game probably goes to MK11 or Smash. Dead or Alive 6 was the only 2019 fighter I played this year - I liked it, but last year's Soulcalibur 6 is way more my speed and has been consistently supported with more interesting content updates than DOA.
Untitled Goose Game probably takes "Fresh Indie" (BROUGHT TO YOU BY SUBWAY™) just by name/meme value even if it's not the best game on that list, which is probably either Outer Wilds or Gris. ...or Disco Elysium, but that's a tough game to gauge for awards potential at a show like this. (Also its fans kinda suck and winning things won't help that.)
Game Direction feels like it's either Control or Outer Wilds but this is a weird category, like they feel the need to have a separate award for direction just because it's a big deal at movie awards? I don't know. It's not a 1:1 comparable position for games. So it'll go to Kojima and Death Stranding just because of the name association.
Games For Impact, another kinda weird category which I get the reasoning behind but never quite has a name that fits, should go to Kind Words but will probably end up with Life is Strange 2 instead, despite the final episode still not being out by the time this show airs, I think. I could be way off about those dates or how the jury makes that decision; maybe everyone wrote LiS2 off completely due to Episode 5 still being in development, despite the game still being in the nominees.
Independent Game could be a toss-up, kinda hard to imagine the Goose taking both indie-related awards, but who knows. Outer Wilds has to win something so maybe it's this. Or Disco, or Baba. Throw a dart, see where it lands.
Mobile is fairly competitive this year thanks to Apple Arcade's emergence. Grindstone, Sayonara, and What the Golf are all strong picks.
Multiplayer could be Apex, maybe Borderlands. Depends on if Apex was too early in the year and didn't retain as much of its base as it needed. I'm assuming Borderlands is doing okay in that area but I haven't been paying close attention. Tetris 99 is really good.
Narrative feels like another toss-up. Control, Outer Worlds, or Disco feel strongest. I really don't see it going to Death Stranding since it's narrative hasn't really been driving the most conversations about that game and Plague Tale was far enough back in the year I'm not sure how many folks really remember it for its storytelling.
Ongoing Game could be anything, aside from maybe Rainbow 6, which I feel fell right off the map for most people.
I'd like Ashly Burch to win Best Performance as much as possible and she was so good as Parvati, probably this year's best character and my favourite part of Outer Worlds. ...Norman Reedus will win because they want Kojima and Reedus on stage being Kojima and Reedus. Pfft. If not him, Mads.
RPG could go to Outer Worlds if it doesn't win any of its other categories.
Hard to imagine anything other than Cadence of Hyrule or Sayonara Wild Hearts winning Best Soundtrack.
No idea about Sports/Racing. Uhh. Go Dirt Rally?
Best Strategy should go to Fire Emblem in a walk, though Total War and Wargroove are pretty competitive. That said, I'm pretty sure Three Houses outperformed those two both commercially and critically. Wargroove was maybe too early in the year, Total War's Three Kingdoms setting is maybe too niche barring a huge breakout, which it didn't have.
VR/AR feels like No Man's Sky or Beat Saber.

What's with all the E-Sports categories?
Edit: Yeah, I don't really care about most of that. Neither of the games I've played are represented, and only a few of those are on my radar. Sekiro, Goose Game, Wargroove. I need to play LiS2. It sounds like Death Stranding doesn't have enough gameplay for my tastes. I was always apprehensive on that one, anyway. I'm surprised by Control being on there so much. I haven't heard much about it. Might have to look into it...

So the Half-Life: Alyx announcement happened, and... it's just good VR(?)
https://youtu.be/O2W0N3uKXmo
I'm all for high-res Half-Life (remember Escape from City 17), but this isn't grabbing me as much as I wanted it to.

Bloody hell, how many more things can we load into March/April 2020?
This certainly looks very slick for a VR thing, a cut above probably everything else out there on VR platforms, but I agree with you that it's not quite clicking yet. A shiny VR thing that still plays like most of the other VR things doesn't feel like enough.
Hard to be 100% sure of that exactly based on this trailer but the disembodied hand stuff is still there, seems like the rooted in position stuff is still there, which maybe implies the teleportation movement is still there too, so... ehh.
Jeff and Ben talked over it.

Valve is discontinuing the Steam Controller.
https://www.theverge.com/good-deals/201 ... sale-price
...meaning they're blowing out their remaining inventory. Get one for $5 from now 'til whenever they run out. If you need a perfectly cromulent PC gamepad and can't find one of the old wired 360 pads for a reasonable price or in good condition in 2019 or don't wanna step up to a much more expensive XB1 pad, the Steam Controller is fine, just a tad weird. Can't really go wrong at $5.

They charge shipping so it's more like $14, but hell yeah, I just grabbed one. Thanks for sharing!
E: Maybe I can actually play DanganRonpa 3 now. Last time I tried, keyboard controls were unresponsive and I immediately died. Also, I could give Life is Strange another shot. Quit that one because the keyboard and mouse controls felt too clunky for me.

Bloody hell, they added a new 14-heart s-link after you get married. That's huge.
There's so much in 1.4 I wonder if it'll actually force me to reroll. My current save dates all the way back to launch. ...I also have a fair amount of SMAPI-required mods installed that'll complicate the update process. But all that aside, yeah, I'm totally up for losing another 120 hours of my life on Stardew Valley, sure.

Re: [Game News] + General Gamesy Chatter
I started a new farm, this time on the fishing map. I'm interested to see how to use the limited space. Played a couple of days in and the only difference I've found is that I fished up some rice seeds, a new crop that grows faster near to a water source.
Then I fell in the modding hole. There's a recoloured seasons mod which looks real cute, then there's farm buildings that change each season, and then there's a mod that makes all the townsfolk change clothes each season, then there's an anime portrait mod that links into that spritework to make seasonal portraits for all the characters...!
So I'm gonna mess around with all of that.

Life is Strange 2 Episode 5 is out tonight, thus LiS2 is finally complete. I'll pop into it when it unlocks. Spoilers are floating around so watch yer asses. All I really know is it sounds like there's a lot more endings than in previous seasons, or at least more variations.

like the RE2 remake characters (and Lara?) her original costume is available as DLC/preorder bonus.
...at least ya girl Aya was wearing that black dress in the first act of Parasite Eve because she was attending a fancy opera at the time, I dunno what Jill was thinking

She definitely looks a lot better. It's nice to see that kind of change nowadays.
And wow, I actually beat Parasite Eve back in the day, despite being horrible at that type of game. That's a blast from the past. Not sure if I'd personally play it again, but it's definitely remake worthy.

As part of The Game Awards, a bunch of demos for various 2020 bangers are going up on Steam tonight, each with 48-hour limits, so go slide into that gap soon if any of these pique yer interest.

The new System Shock is a biggie, but I'm also excited to check out Eastward, Spiritfarer, Moving Out, Röki, and especially Haven, all of which have looked great at recent E3s and Nintendo Directs.System Shock (Nightdive Studios)
Eastward (Pixpil/Chucklefish)
Spiritfarer (Thunder Lotus)
Moving Out (SMG Studio/Devm Games/Team17)
Röki (Polygon Treehouse/United Label)
Chicory (Greg Lobanov)
Wooden Nickel (Brain&Brain)
Haven (The Game Bakers)
Heavenly Bodies (2pt Interactive)
Acid Knife (Powerhoof)
The Drifter (Powerhoof)
Carrion (Phobia/Devolver)
SkateBIRD (Glass Bottom Games)

Various TGA reveals of varying interest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p18CbMcG-es
I don't know if I'll ever play No More Heroes 3 but this trailer is a goddamned riot and totally worth the weird-ass journey it took me on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L6XKFc6gr0
Microsoft straight-up dumped the next Xbox name and hardware reveal on us right here, like six months ahead of E3. The name is... it is what it is, I guess: Xbox Series X. XbxSX. An excess of Xes. XSX will probably be the most common abbreviation. The hardware is a tall cube. A previous generation Mac Pro with the curves cut out. Sure. Why not?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJWI4bkD9ZM
Hellblade 2 was announced as part of the Xbox reveal above. Here it is again on its own if you don't feel like sitting through the first part. I doubt it will remain exclusive for long. It may not even be exclusive to begin with. Did Microsoft acquire Ninja Theory? Maybe they did, in which case, just ignore this whole rambly paragraph. Nevermind, okay, it looks (and sounds) amazing. I still need to play the original. You know how I am.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=516GnLC82WM
The somewhat confusingly titled Bravely Default 2 was also there. It's the third game in the Bravely series, following Bravely Second. You can see why that might rouse a few "wait what" statements. Maybe there was no Bravely Second, actually. Maybe we imagined it. Maybe there is no spoon. You think that's air you're breathing now?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLAHB7VYnG4
I forgot all about The Forest, despite living in one. I think I own The Forest? But I've never played The Forest. I'm not sure how that keeps happening. I'm also not sure if the original The Forest even left Early Access before this point where at now with a sequel suddenly happening. Oh well, here's more of that, whatever it was. Trees.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mfjdNf0SDY
A new Dark Alliance game is coming next year, after... I want to say 15 years? I imagine they'll be completely different from the PS2 originals, and they've lost the Baldur's Gate branding, opting instead for just D&D straight-up no chaser, so there's that, too. All the people who made those old Dark Alliance games? Dead. Well, not dead, but moved on. The choice of music here is a really hilarious eyeroll the likes of which I haven't seen since the original Dragon Age "new shit" trailer. I'm sure that won't make it into the game. This isn't another Prince of Persia reboot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0pN73duXQI
Weird West could be neat. Looks to be a top-down isometric action RPG from folks well outside the usual expected lineage for those types of games. Maybe they can do some interesting new shit in this space.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bxdvRpsZEE
Ghost of Tsushima is finally (roughly) dated for Summer 2020. It'll would seem to be one of the final big damn deals out on the PS4 before the generational transition happens and everyone flocks into the PS5 launch window. I love how it looks. I imagine it plays like Horizon without the robits. Can't sell me any better than that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-llJ0B8QFlM
I'm not as sure about Naraka Bladepoint, but it could appeal greatly to folks looking for something faster and arcadier than Tsushima with bits and pieces of the same style. Those frames, though. Hrm. Could be a rough one. Platinum is maybe who you want for this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb55ycOwGFA
The zombie corpse of Telltale is shambling around working on Wolf Among Us 2. Or, still working on it, as I believe production had started before the studio collapsed. I don't know how many previous Telltale folks are back at whatever entity is currently calling itself Telltale and working on this sequel. It's still sad to think about. But worth thinking about and maybe looking into before spending money on anything using their old label.
That's about it.
