Yep. Though the way this is going, merely surviving three missions is promotion-worthy. And now you're the medic. I consider your continued survival as leading by example, hopefully you rub off on the rest of us. (phrasing!)

OPERATION FROZEN GIANT
UFO Landing Site, United States

Sgt. Thor "Mack" McOdin (Heavy)
Sq. Estranged (Sniper)
Sq. D Herder (Support)
Rk. Blutiger Engel
Rk. True Perception

A landed UFO means more enemies than a crashed one, fortunately with the Officer Training School now up and running we can take five soldiers into the field.

The LZ is in a gulley with little cover and both sides exposed. The team decides to pick a side and circle around rather than risking the middle. The first sounds of alien activity however come from the other side, so we're going to have to be careful.

As the team creeps forward it becomes apparent the noises they're hearing are from within the UFO itself. Soon enough it comes into sight and the team strategise a way to breach it.

Thor and Bluti approach the door and with actions freed up, Bluti opens it. Inside is the Outsider only, who dashes to the inside of the wall where Bluti is standing. Noone has a decent shot at it since it's in full cover, so Bluti pulls back and lobs a grenade. It does a bit of damage but more importantly destroys his cover. True Perception finishes the job.

Image

Thor and DHerder go on overwatch with the threat dealt to. It was a good thing they did, as three floaters appear. Both CFers hit the target, and one goes down. The other floaters retreat to the roof of the UFO, thinking they'll be safe. There is one person however, who scoffs at such a thing.

Perfectly positioned, Estranged cares little for it's height bonus, and snipes the floater in sight.

Image
Image

The rest of the team go on overwatch since the third floater is out of sight. It turns out it was inside the ship, and with TP flanked it takes a shot - but misses the target! Riding his luck, TP circles around his cover and guns the alien scum down. In doing so, he discovers three Thin Men, though they haven't noticed us for some raisin. With them just out of rocket range, TP moves forward to get their attention.

Then this happens.

Image

Yep, three thin men AND three sectoids. They bunch up but still out of rocket range. We need to draw them in. TP moves back out of sight and the team prepare themselves. The distinctive sound of sectoids mind merging is heard, then only the buffed sectoid advances into the UFO, hiding behind the power source. Thor is the only one with a shot, and it's a bad shot, so he moves out of sight and the team overwatches. A thin man shows up and spits poison at Bluti, she isn't impressed but doesn't panic.

The poison itself probably won't be an issue, but it affects her aim so she pulls back behind DHerder. The poison wears off pretty quickly, and the team stays entrenched. Two thin men show up to shoot at Estranged, she overwatches one of them but it doesn't kill the filth. Luckily both alien shots do little but destroy Thor's cover. This whole side of the UFO is now open for business.

Thor decides that the thin men are the most dangerous, and can hit two of them with one rocket, but it will leave him out of cover. He does it anyway, and DHerder backs him up with a smoke grenade. It is lucky he did as two Sectoids fire at Thor - the first misses, the second hits for 2 damage. This is why Thor packed a vest.

A thin man shows up trying to flank the team, TP fires at him twice but can't hit the slimy bastard. A sectoid then shows up in the UFO and is gunned down by Thor's overwatch. The thin man retreats again.

Patience then pays off as a buffed sectoid rushes fowards - again DHerder misses his shot but Thor doesn't... and heavies are supposed to be the inaccurate ones. The bulbous-headed baby drops dead and the Thin Man shows up again on the flank. TP doesn't miss his third attempt at the shot, but only clips the alien. Fortunately it must have been distracted by the pain because it moves itself into a flanked position and doesn't fire.

Image

With one sectoid left it can't even do it's mind merge shenanigans. The team stays on overwatch but the sectoid is playing on it's new WiiU or something and doesn't want to come anywhere near the rain of hot death outside the ship. TP and Estranged advance to try and spot the alien, but it was playing a popular game called overwatch, and splashes hot plasma on TP's face. He survives, but it is lucky we have great cosmetic surgeons in the team.

Image

With the enemy overwatch used up, TP dashes into cover out of sight and Estranged moves to the opposide side door. The alien has a taste for TP's blood and chases after him, leaving itself flanked by Estranged. She doesn't miss her shot.

OPERATION SHATTERED FUTURE
Liverpool, England

Lt. Thor McOdin (Heavy)
Cpl. Estranged (Sniper)
Sq. D Herder (Support)
Sq. Falcon Critical (Sniper)
Rk. Pontiff of Zargos

We have reached that point. With TP, Bluti and HunterF in the infirmary - all remaining members of CF-XCOM are deployed to the next alien abduction site. Between the mission name and the fact this map is a graveyard, it's not good signs. We did research rapid recovery at the training school however.

Pontiff moves forward and finds two floaters. Thor finds he has a 70% shot, but manages to fluff it. Not a good start. At least with Holo-targeting everyone else now has better accuracy against that morbid fusion of alien and machine. Falcon lobs a grenade over the car they're hiding behind, weakening both and destroying their cover. Pontiff gets the first notch on his gun by finishing off the one Thor missed, but this leaves Estranged and DHerder with moves and one alien alive.

Image

Something then occurs to me. Floaters have grenades. Cars like to explode. Four of the team are behind this car. It has never been more important to take out an alien. He's never killed one before, and may never have more pressure. DHerder steps forward with his pistol to be the hero.

Image

He nails it. Well if he was saving himself so his first time is special, that would certainly rank up there.

Next order of business is to get our new squadsight sniper to some high ground so she can lord over the whole area. Pontiff escorts Estranged up a side alley. With the sniper in position Thor and DHerder move forward and find two sectoids. Thor advances and lays down some suppressing fire (does no damage, reduces enemy aim, gives free overwatch if the alien scum moves) activating Holo-targeting again, allowing Estranged to take her first squad sight shot.

Image

It's a hit, but the sectoid was buffed and doesn't go down. DHerder however now has a taste for alien blood and finishes the job. The other sectoid hides in the darkness.

Falcon moves forward a little and finds two more floaters. The team take their shots but Pontiff misses and Estranged again hits but doesn't kill the front one. Falcon finishes that off with his pistol, but the other is out of DHerder's range. He overwatches instead and also misses his shot. The floater shoots at Falcon who is only in half cover, but misses.

Falcon seizes the opportunity and switches to his sniper rifle to return fire. That sectoid is still out there, so the 'Vanguard' (Thor, DHerder and Falcon) start to move towards the sounds they hear, while Pontiff and Estranged remain holed up on the high ground. I would leave Estranged on her own back there, but Floaters are notorious for dropping down behind isolated snipers which can be bad news.

The sectoid makes an appearance and both DHerder and Estranged miss their overwatch shots. The alien shoots at DH but misses, and finds itself in a flanked position. DHerder claims his third kill and a promotion.

Image

That's a wrap, and noone even got hit.

OPERATION SWIFT MOON
Kolkata, India

Cpt. Thor "Mack" McOdin (Heavy)
Cpl. Estranged (Sniper)
Cpl. D Herder (Support)
Sq. Pontiff of Zargos (Assault)
Sq. Hunter Friar (Heavy)

More alien abductions, this time we choose India because Asia is a big place and has a lot of countries freaking out. Currently DHerder is the only person on active duty that can use the laser rifle, and with some kills under his belt is keen to test it out. Also he's changed his armor to a hot orange to really drive the point home.

The area of engagement is a gas station/burger bar, this means a lot of explosives around the LZ. The team moves forward with extra caution. Two floaters show up for a burger, but they picked the wrong diner.

Image

Thor, HunterF and DHerder rain hot death on one of the floaters. It is unclear who got the killing blow, but the evening air did light up like guy fawkes. The team moves forward into engagement positions, and Pontiff gets the attention of two sectoids. They scramble for cover, but HunterF has different ideas. He fires a rocket at the window they're hiding behind and earns himself two kills. The floater remains at large.

It then becomes apparent that the diner was the location of a sectoid convention, as five more show up to see what the noise was. Three of them decide to hide between a car and a gas pump. Pontiff is on hand to point out the flaw in their logic. Clearly those large heads are just full of air.

Image

The team moves into the building but things start to go south. Thor suppresses a lone sectoid, melting his cover; but DH misses the followup 83% shot and there are limited backup options. The rest of the team move to cover, but the alien wisely doesn't move and remains out of cover.

Thor is empty and takes the time to reload, the rest of the team move in on the sectoid. In getting to a better position, DH notices the other sectoid is still standing next to his friend, so he lasers the further one only he can see. Pontiff advances with his shotgun but a partially melted wall remains in his way. HunterF takes a shot but whiffs, leaving Estranged with her pistol to take on the exposed Sectoid. She crits and kills the blighter.

Mission successful. I guess both floaters died in the guy fawkes display.

If you think things are going well, XCOM has the solution. This cutscene means it's time for the first terror mission.

Image

OPERATION CURSED STRANGER
Terror Mission
Tokyo, Japan

Lt. Thor "Mack" McOdin (Heavy)
Sgt. "Prophet" D Herder (Support)
Sgt. "Drifter" Estranged (Sniper)
Sq. Pontiff of Zargos (Assault)
Sq. Hunter Friar (Heavy)

I'm packing two heavies because rockets. The team moves in cautiously. The idea is to save as many civilians as possible, however the team must be most important. Two floaters show up and Estranged's overwatch drops one. Thor and Pontiff take out the other.

CIVILIAN COUNT - 15 alive, 0 saved, 3 dead.

Two more floaters show up. One brazenly sits in the middle of the street. DHerder and Estranged both fire at it twice and both miss twice. The floater also misses DH twice, then i see a flash of plasma near the floater killing a civilian. So they're both there. We take a gamble and HunterF fires his rocket down the alley to try and drop the two floaters.

Image

Only one damage number comes up, the other was outside the blast zone. The other floater takes off and lands behind Thor.

Image

It may not look like it, but that floater is behind full cover. Thor scoffs at percentages and hits it anyway, leaving it nearly dead. Estranged backs up to flank and pistol whips it to death. The greater threat is still out there.

CIVILIAN COUNT - 11 alive, 1 saved, 6 dead.

The higher level of this structure worries me, so HunterF goes up to see what's lurking. Knowing is half the ... oh fuck.

Image

These are Chryssalids. They are melee aliens that hit hard and crit often. I don't have anyone with enough firepower to take them down in one shot.

Image

That however is not the worst of it. In the meantime we have to deal with this situation. The first step is easy. If Thor fires his rocket, it will take them down to 2hp each. Can we guarantee that our collective overwatches can do the rest? The only other option is for HunterF to not move and throw a grenade at his feet. The grenade combined with the rocket would be sufficient... but that's not what we're about.

HunterF leaps off the roof and Thor fires his rocket. Here's the thing about rockets... they're 90% accurate. Thor decides this is the 10%, but luckily due to the close range still hits the two aliens. Now we need overwatches.

It was a risky plan but it paid off. DHerder and Pontiff nail the first Chryssalid, Estranged the second as it sprints hungrily after HunterF.

Image

CIVILIAN COUNT - 9 alive, 1 saved, 8 dead.

The team positions themselves for overwatches, knowing the last Chryssalid is still out there. We don't have to wait long. It leaps from the roof and dashes towards Thor. Everyone misses their overwatch. Fortunately a quirk of AI Chryssalids is that they like to sprint and then stand near someone instead of timing their runs so they can actually attack.

Image

Thor fires first, so the others benefit from holo-targeting. He hits, and Pontiff finishes it with a shotgun. The mission however, is not over. The team reload. Another Chryssalid shows up, DHerder misses his overwatch but it runs straight at Pontiff and Thor. Neither of them miss.

OPERATION CURSED SPARK
UFO Crash Site, Nigeria

Lt. "Drifter" Estranged (Sniper)
Sgt. "Prophet" D Herder (Support)
Cpl. Pontiff of Zargos (Assault)
Cpl. Hunter Friar (Heavy)
Sq. True Perception (Support)

We shot down a medium UFO, it took both our interceptors to do so, and we're going to have to clear the insides of this thing. Thor takes another break, despite the last time he did so going disastrously.

The team spots high ground to one side and moves to secure it. Estranged sets herself up the elevated position and the team moves forward. Two thin men stroll into line of sight, HunterF and Est both miss their overwatch shots, but Est doesn't the second time around. Squad sight snipers on high ground are pretty OP.

Image

Estranged drops the thin man and HunterF retreats to better cover... uncovering two sectoids. Pontiff run and guns his way over and shotguns one, the other remains at large along with the thin man in another direction. With a couple of troops on overwatch, a suicidal sectoid charges at Pontiff and DHerder guns it down before it can get close.

Another two sectoids show up and one brazenly sits behind a tree daring us to shoot at him. We do, and we miss. The thin man from earlier has swung around to back up the sectoids as well, but Est puts him down. Pontiff moves in to get a shot at the sectoid, but it is overwatching.

Image

It hits for 4 damage, meaning Pontiff's going to be in the infirmary for a while. DHerder continues to lead by example, lasering the sectoid through a tree for the kill. Pontiff darts back to DH for a little healing spray, and HunterF finishes off the other little grey immigrant.

No other aliens appear on the way into the ship, and even inside the ship it's in the control room that we find one Outsider. Everyone misses him and he responds in kind. Again most of the team miss, but HunterF claims the kill.

MISSION SUCCESSFUL

WOUNDED (5 days)
Cpl. Hunter "Thunder" Friar (Heavy) - 7 kills, 4 missions PROMOTION

Pontiff earns the nickname "Loco", probably due to running into battle with a shotgun when facing plasma toting aliens.
HunterF steals some of Thor's "Thunder" by proving his match as a heavy.

On higher difficulties it's more about keeping your troops out of sight and not giving the enemy a chance to shoot at you. Considering they all have more health and you have more variance in your damage, that can be tough. Without strategy you're likely to lose badly.

There's a dude called Beaglerush that does a playthrough of impossible difficulty, I think just from watching that the CF-XCOM survivability tripled.

Re: [XCOM] Watch Del/Falcon lead you all to your deaths.

I don't think difficulty is the issue. Maybe it is as things could be different at higher difficulties. If it's anything that makes me lose interest, it's the lack of depth.

First, gear. There are like five armour types of wich three are nothing more than damage resistance upgrades and three levels of guns. That's pretty meager. After plasma weapons there aren't any further weapons to research. You can upgrade some, but eh. Just three types.

Enemies. Unless you foolhardily rush ahead, you will always face small packs of the same enemy type each. A pack of Sectoids, followed by a pack of Mutons, followed by a pack of Floaters, on the same map. You get the idea. There is no variation in the packs of enemies. Not to mention that their AI is pretty stupid. Minus the Berserker, they always go for cover once they spot you and camp it. No flanking, no coordinating. Floaters excluded, but their flanking is a cheap ability and not a sign of clever AI. Just an ability.

Levels are usually not filled with much variation. All the crash sites/landing missions feel the same. Same build up. Only terror missions and bomb missions felt like they added something, and that was just a bloody reach the objectives in a certain time limit of sorts. Sure I can try different squad set-ups, but the majority of the levels will feel the same.

Interception minigame. Cute, but doesn't really add spice to the game. Either the interceptors shoot down everything, or I need the full upgrades on several Demons to stand a chance of taking down a Overseer ship.

Repetition, balance issues, RNG issues. I can't ignore them, but at least I spewed my gaul.

From what I've seen of Impossible the enemies are far more aggressive, and have stats buffed to the point where you'll never win a firefight, you have to advance and flank constantly. Enemies will frequently run into your vision range, and while they always run for cover as their 'discovered' action, since you are basically forced to advance and flank to be effective the intensity increases as you may uncover more enemies in doing so. Basically the enemies no longer sit around waiting to be discovered.

The other option is like old X-COM where enemies could snipe you from outside your visual range and it was often an effort just to get most of your team out of the Skyranger safely. I heard stories of an alien sniping a dude before he left the Skyranger and he panicked and shot his rocket, wiping out the whole team. New XCOM is fairer.

Perhaps you should wait for XCOM2, this seems very much a proof of concept showing that this old school style of game can succeed in the modern market. With the success of the game they can start to push the boundaries for the next game.

OPERATION BLACK Thor
Manchester, England

Cpt. Thor "Mack" McOdin (Heavy)
Sgt. "Loco" Pontiff of Zargos (Assault)
Cpl. Falcon Critical (Sniper)
Sq. True Perception (Support)
Rk. Blutiger Engel

Thor and Pontiff guide the three lowest ranking soldiers in CF-XCOM on the next alien abduction mission. We're in Manchester and it's not football hooligans that are making the team nervous. Still, we finished our research and construction on laser sniper rifles and shotguns, so we look hella awesome coming in to land.

Image

It's a convenience store and there's very little cover near the LZ. The team moves cautiously forward seeking heavier cover. Pontiff spots two floaters tearing up some packets of crisps (we are in England, wat!) and they scramble to cover. Thor and Bluti are in an easily flankable position so they need to consider their moves carefully. Thor, Falcon and TP go on overwatch while the other two seek cover.

This turns out to be a poor option. Falcon overwatches first, but can't control his hot laser pistol and instead of going through the glass door in a nice tidy shot, he misses and the entire wall melts.

Image

An impressive display of power, but it presents a big problem. Pontiff had advanced to that wall for the full cover, and his protection just melted. Still, it opens up the wall for Thor to follow up and he nails the floater as it advances.

Unfortunately, the other floater is quick to capitalise on Zargos' situation. It advances and shoots at him. With no cover he has no protection.

Image

A massive 9 damage critical drops Zargos stone dead. Falcon freaks out and shoots his laser pistol at the alien scum and melts it into the tinned food shelves. TP also freaks out and shoots at Falcon, but misses, hitting only the car Falcon is taking cover by. This is much worse.

See, when soldiers panic they stay panicked for the next turn and won't respond to commands. Falcon is taking cover by a car about to explode and in his panicked state, cannot be moved away to safety. This is going poorly. Thor takes Bluti away from Falcon, with her out of sight she won't freak out when he dies. And die he does.

Image

So two floaters are dead, at the cost of two of us. The shiny new Laser Sniper Rifle and Laser Shotgun both lie un-fired by the two deceased. Now Thor must guide Bluti and TP to victory... or death.

They skirt around the edge of the building, clearing the parking lot. Two Thin Men show up and limber away. Thor has a shot on both of them, but it's pretty low. He chooses instead to suppress the more exposed one. With holo-targeting he also buffs the team's aim against this enemy. Bluti moves up and nails the suppressed alien through a cop car's windows. This gal's stone cold.

Image

TP overwatches to try and catch the other thin man running. It chooses instead to run away. The team sets up overwatches and spreads out to avoid the lanky alien's poison breath. Then more trouble shows up.

TP misses his overwatch shot as two hulking aliens show their faces. This is really not good. These guys are Mutons. They pack grenades, can yell to inspire each other, cause panic and have an innate 20% evasion. Basically tough sons of bitches.

Thor and TP retreat to a nearby truck, Bluti hunkers down to try and survive. The Mutons advance, one right up to the same SUV while the thin man takes a pot shot at Thor. He misses but hits the truck. TP and Thor now need to retreat further or die. Hopefully the advanced Muton will go with the truck.

Thor dashes to further back cover, Bluti and TP retreat a little and TP drops a smoke grenade to protect them. The mutons however scoff at my retreat. One shoots through the smoke at Blutiger Engel. It's super effective.

Thor panics this time, and fires at the advanced Muton, landing a solid hit. The Muton then advances and shoots back, splashing Thor's armor with sticky, slimy plasma. Thor is still panicked, and one of the Mutons is now in location unknown.

Actually it's not unknown. In it's eagerness to damage a Thor, the Muton neglected to move. The SUV explodes and takes the Muton with it. Now that it cannot explode again, TP moves to the blackened SUV and prepares an overwatch.

The Muton advances into sight, but not into the open. It takes cover where it's comrade died but doesn't shoot at anyone. Thor calms down and decides it's high time he used heavy explosives. He fires a rocket at the ground near the Muton and it wounds the tough bastard but luckily also kills the Thin Man hiding in the building nearby. The muton has four health left, and TP decides not to take any chances.

Heh, I remember that map. Basically tore down that entire building in a crossfight with Mutons. Grenades everywhere! The bottom corner is a shitty spot to start out and the parking lot is the worst place you can be.

Nobody but Thor is safe anymore! :freakout:
